The Airplane Phobia

Actually it wasn’t a phobia about planes or flying, it was about noise.  Here in Franconia there is a small airport and in the summer they give glider rides.  The plane that tows the glider makes a louder, longer, more obnoxious noise than a small plane by itself.

I became sensitive to the sound in the summer of 1984.  It made me feel scared and angry and nauseous.  I remember screaming and banging my head on the floor.  I began reacting even to the word airport.  I was only able to relax on rainy days.  I felt sick most of the time and had finally been diagnosed with systemic yeast.  This was in the days when doctors were still claiming it wasn’t a disease (it can be caused by over-use of antibiotics) and the only available substitute for bread was rice cakes.

Finally I began leaving the area on days when the planes were flying.  I would take my food — I couldn’t eat wheat, dairy, sugar or yeast — and my journal and something to read, and go to the house of a friend who lived out of the area.  The whole thing was a horrible experience.  I hated having to run away. I was angry at the people who thought the planes were fun, and at myself for being so sensitive.  I tried earplugs and ear protectors designed for people running heavy machinery.  I could still hear enough of the noise to react.  I began wearing a Walkman with earphones.  The only music that worked was something called Music for 18 Musicians.  The sound was continuous and had a vibratory quality so it could absorb the noise of machinery.  If I tried to listen to music with breaks in it, invariably there would be a plane during the 4 seconds of silence.

I tried many things to heal it, NLP, a very expensive program to retrain my hearing, chiropractors, psychic healers, nothing worked.  People who didn’t understand would say things like “Why don’t you go down to the airport and see that they’re just ordinary people?” Just the word “airport” would freak me out.  I remember one day, standing in the house, I heard something that sounded like a chainsaw, and my heart went into adrenaline through the roof, and then I saw it was just a fly buzzing on a window.  I was horrified to see how sensitive to noise I was.  I suffered from this thing for 13 years.

Finally in 1996, I realized I was dealing with severe depression.  I tried Paxil, which was a horrendous experience.  In the summer I discovered that one effect of the airplane noise was to plunge me into deep depression.

Looking back at it, I can see better how it became so horrendous.  Hypersensitivity to sound is a symptom of PTSD, but I still had no idea that I had been traumatized.  One thing about an obnoxious and very loud sound, you can’t look away as you can from an ugly sight.  Your only recourse is to go far enough away.  Finding it impossible to live in your own house, in your own town, is depressing in itself.  I felt hopeless and helpless. The planes were triggering flashbacks to a helpless, terrified infant.

Healing from the phobia happened literally overnight.  I had started taking Imipramine (Anti-depressant medication) in February and after a few months was beginning to feel  better.  I had started therapy with Dr. Cynthia Rankin in St. Johnsbury, Vermont.  She was a specialist in mood disorders.  I had been seeing her for several months.  It was May and the planes were starting up.  On Friday I had a session with Dr. Rankin.  I asked her if it was OK to “white-knuckle it” through the noise.  She said “Of course.”  Then she said she had observed a pattern in my behavior.  I would start a project that had several steps.  I would do the first two steps just fine, but if I ran into trouble on the third I would conclude that I “couldn’t do it.” I would fail to see that I had already managed to do part of it successfully, in fact I would even define those first steps as failures.  This was enormously interesting to me.  I knew something about training dogs and that the principles worked for human beings also.  I figured I could retrain myself about the planes.  I would write down each one survived with white knuckles as a success, and see how many I could survive before I had to leave the house.  Saturday was rainy, and I went to the first level Reiki training.  I had the oddest feeling afterward that my immune system had “switched on.” I could almost feel a protective field around me.  Sunday was sunny and I sat down with paper and pen, waiting for the planes to start.  Each time one went over I would say “that’s one survived” and make a little airplane symbol on the page.  By the end of the day, I had survived 13 planes, and I knew the phobia was over.  Dr. Rankin had given me my power back for which I am eternally grateful.  I still hated the sound, but I no longer freaked out, and gradually the sound began to fade into the background.  Every now and then I notice a plane towing a glider and think “God! I suffered from that for 13 years, and now I don’t even notice them.”

Cape Cod Dance Camp

The long break is because I went to a Dance Camp on Cape Cod, and I didn’t take my computer (!) I did take my journal but didn’t write much.  I really enjoyed the camp, good people, good dances, good food!  Looking back at it, I also see that I was experiencing everything very differently from in the past, which tells me how much I have healed.  I never had one of those times when I feel like I don’t belong, and go hide in my room and cry, and creep back into the circle trying to be invisible.  I was able to sit still and enjoy: watching the others dance, watching the waves at the beach, hanging out with people & not having to talk.  I only got triggered once, and the person who did it immediately knew what effect it had on me, and apologized at once.  I think that’s the first time that’s ever happened to me, and it was a very healing thing.  Usually the people who trigger me have no idea and I have to go away and process it, sometimes even need a therapist, before I can begin to be comfortable with them again.
I was able to enjoy the blue sky and white clouds, the rain (we had a little at the beginning), the bright green leaves, the pine needles and cones on the paths, the gentle breeze, the gusts of wind.  I didn’t get overwhelmed by lots of people, lots of talking, traffic, stores, noise when we drove to the beach, even the beach despite the fact that there was about 1 person per square yard of sand as far as I could see in either direction. (My scientist got in here and complained and did the math, it would probably be more correct to say that there was one person per six square yards of sand.) (Also, people were in clumps, so there were clumps of space between them.) When walking on the beach proved difficult — slanted wet sand, dry sand as hard to walk in as snow — I went and sat on my towel & watched the waves & watched people going in & out of the water, and enjoyed myself thoroughly.  Depression restricts and deadens the capacity for enjoyment, so not only was camp fun because of the fun things, it was also fun because I could REALLY THOROUGHLY enjoy it.  (Good for me!) 8)

Manifestation: Beginner’s Luck

Mentioning the trip with Cara reminded me when I manifested something I wanted without even knowing about the technique.  Later, when we took DMA, I understand why it worked so well.  It was the fall of 1976. I was living in Brunswick Maine and participating in a dream class which evolved into a dream group.  I was thinking of going back to school, to Bowdoin College to take a geology course so I could go on and get a PhD in Geology. I went into the library to the stacks where the geology books were.  As I wandered down the row of shelves geology morphed into archeology.  I saw a big book called “Rude Stone Monuments in Britain.” I pulled it out. Thumbing through the pages I saw a picture of Stonehenge and thought “I’ll have to get back there.” I didn’t think of how I might do it, or how much it would cost, or that I didn’t deserve it, or any of the innumerable roadblocks we commonly put up.  I just set an intention and the Universe said “Yes.” In January I received a magazine from the Natural History Museum of New York.  I thought perhaps someone had given me a gift membership, but no other information came with it. (I never did find out why they sent it to me.) In the magazine was an ad for a trip sponsored by the Museum: “The Island World of Britain” which described a trip on a boat that would sail from Southampton, visit the Scilly Isles, the coast of Wales, the Island of Lewis in the Outer Hebrides, the Shetland Islands, the Orkney Islands, and return down the east coast.  I was especially drawn by the stone circle of Callanish in the Outer Hebrides.  I talked about it to a friend in dream group who said “I saw that.  I was thinking of doing it.  Shall we go together?” I thought about how I might manage it financially and decided that I would get a loan, or a job, or sell some stock.  So we sent in our deposit checks.  Within a couple of weeks my parents called & said they were giving me $3000 this year as they had in the past.  They said “Do you want stocks or cash?” I said “Cash, please, I’m going to Europe.”
The trip was wonderful in some ways.  Being on a boat meant we didn’t have to pack & unpack, we just went to sleep and the boat carried us to our next destination.  Because it was the Museum’s trip, we went to gardens and birding sites as well as ancient megalithic monuments, so it was enjoyable and educational.  But the symptoms of PTSD were there — insomnia, overreacting to small stimuli — which made it hard to enjoy everything.  I kept a journal and used some of it in The Feminine of History is Mystery.

DMA is a course in creating your life developed by Robert Fritz, now called Technologies for Creating.

Good Stories

(Written in January 2010)
I enjoyed my talk with Elizabeth.  I started out telling her how scared I’ve been and how exhausted.  I read her my list of affirmations, she said they sounded like Yankee values: hard working, thrifty, etc.  So I added some fun ones.  I told her I thought the fear might be because I’m pushing the envelope: getting my slide show back together, offering to do astronomy at the White Mountain School.  Talking about the slide show really cheered me up.  Elizabeth said she thought she’d seen it.
I also told her a lot of the story of my life.  1964: Astronomy, Stonehenge, Fire Festivals, Folk Dance.  How I manifested the trip with Cara.  Ricky’s trip and meeting Louise in Rennes.  She found it fascinating. (!) It was fun to tell it to a sympathetic listener.
O yes, I guess I was telling those stories to Elizabeth to remind myself how there was help for things that I was “meant” to do.  So I wonder about the “glitch” in the projector.  Foto Factory says they will have to send it somewhere.  I think I’ll ask around, maybe try it myself first.

(Written in February 2010)
The session with Caryn was very low key.  I went to my corner, but sat up on my cushion.  Told her about the last few days, about trying to create a blog on Google’s template and ending up frustrated and activated.  (How does that feel in your body?) A very fine grained mix of tense frustrated pieces and energized pieces.  Then I began to feel tired so I just lay down.  Noticed how much bigger and softer my breathing is.  I told Caryn about being reminded of Schlomo Carlebach and starting to collect good memories.  O yes, I also told her about what I think are flashbacks to painful (probably lonely) times in my childhood & how they only came when I was alone.  But I think they stopped once I figured that out.  I got through last Saturday alone OK.  (Well I did have a visit with Lynelle.)   Then I felt really tired so I just lay down.  I did have moments of imagining a movement, but my body wasn’t really interested.  It felt good to just lie down feeling comfortable.  I talked to Caryn about odd little things that came up.  It was like a conversation lying beside a campfire.    I told Caryn about my feeling that my life had been wasted because I didn’t have a storehouse of good memories.  She asked “What would the Buddha say?” and I laughed.  He’d say right now is all that matters.

Action Plan

(Written in January 2010)
With Caryn I worked on recognizing the slide into depression and counteracting it by finding a resource, any resource, some place that feels incrementally better.  We looked at the empty places in my schedule, talked about how that scares me, and that I need more structure in my life.  I talked about the slide show — Caryn pointed out how I became more present and engaged.  I realize how this happens a lot.  Even as long ago as the Kornfield Retreat at Kripalu, when I got talking to my new roommate & she was interesting, and I came right out of depression.  And yesterday I went to visit Mary & Belkin, I was a little bummed out but started to feel better almost right away.  And when I was taking pottery classes, I was always fine during the class.  So I have an action plan.

1) sign up for pottery
2) Find someone at WREN to help me get the slide show computerized
3) Ask Pat & Cory if they know any one at White Mountain School — I could do Astronomy sessions for people who are interested.

A reminder:  in Somatic Experiencing a “resource” is anything, a thought or image or person, that makes you feel better in your body, warmer, more relaxed, more grounded, etc.

The “Slide Show” is my audio-visual presentation about the megaliths of Britain. I got very excited about it after my ritual of letting go in November 2010.  But I’ve been having a hard time getting it together.  (Note: if you click on this link you will get this entry followed by two about the slide show.)

Guidance

(Written in January 2010, but reflects just how I’m feeling today, June 10, 2011)

Dear Guides and Guardian Spirits, I’m having a pretty bad time.  Can you help me?
Dear Jenny, you are needed on the planet at this time.  Not because of what you do, but because of who you are.  You embody the values of compassion, kindness, concern for the environment.  Just doing that you are a bulwark against the greed and fear of the culture.  It’s hard to hold on to those values against the stream of the culture.  It doesn’t matter whether you are feeling OK and “getting things done” or whether you are depressed and struggling.  Just as you are, you are needed.  Just as you are, we love you.

Disconnected

(Written in March 2009)
Feeling pretty bleak.  Disconnected from everything meaningful.  How does that feel in my body?  It’s a flat grey feeling, like cardboard, no life, no energy.  It’s so painful to be in this state.  I tell myself Barbara is here and I’m not alone, but I can’t feel it.

Dear Guides and Guardian Spirits, I’m having a pretty hard time.  I have some hope now that the imipramine will work though I know it’s going to take a while.  What’s being really hard is feeling so disconnected from everything meaningful.  Can you help me?
Dear Jenny, we love you very much.  The feeling of being disconnected is a necessary part of the passage you are making now.  You are having to disconnect from old disfunctional ways of relating that do not serve you, so you can reconnect in more healthy ways.  We know this is hard and scary.  You are not doing anything wrong.  You are suffering the consequences of your barren and traumatic infancy, and you must be conscious of these feelings in order for them to heal.  Remember we are with you even when you can’t feel us.

A Healing Process

(Written in March 2009)
Yesterday was pretty bad — severe nausea all day.   Barbara came & agreed to come stay for a few days.  She’ll help with food & housework & walking the dog.  What a relief.
If only I could feel some love instead of this stony lostness.

I am creating for myself well being every day.
I am getting better every day.
I am doing the best I can.

2PM. Turkeys appear.  I am in a healing process.

I am in a healing process.  Kayla suggested that I needed to be saying/thinking something affirmative so this is the one I’m using most.
I’m so tired.  Barbara is being a huge help — cooking meals & washing dishes.  Having someone to eat with really keeps the nausea at bay.

Session with Caryn:
Feeling lost is because I’m dismantling very old and dysfunctional coping strategies.
Feeling disconnected from Neskaya etc is because those things I really care about have to be uncoupled from effort effort.
Allow myself to notice that I’m asking for help and receiving it.
Allow myself to notice and be curious about things that are different.
Notice: I’m no longer so scared and lost when I express the really deep old feelings.

Surrender

(Written in February 2009)
I’ve started asking God to please show me what to do.  I’m trying to surrender my life into his/her/its/their hands — I can’t do this so you must.  Please, if there is any meaning or value to my life, it there’s any contribution I’m supposed to make to the welfare of the planet, please show me what to do and please heal me so I can do it.

Actually no nausea yet today.  But I have been feeling extremely lost and weak.  I was too tired to walk the dog & had to ask a friend to do it.

I’m again considering being hospitalized.  It’s just being too hard to keep going and my brain is not working very well.  I worry about what I would do in the hospital — no Bella, no friends, no books, no puzzles —

I Want My Life Back

(Written in February 2009)
It was pretty amazing not to feel nauseous all day.  There was a little around lunchtime.  I can’t say I felt great, but it was such a relief not to feel sick.

I want my life back.  I want to enjoy watching the chickadees come, to enjoy hauling wood & building fires.  I want to feel comfortable in my body, and safe, and grounded.  I want to enjoy dancing, and creating and teaching programs at Neskaya.  I want to be able to enjoy taking care of the building, washing dishes, cleaning candles & altar stuff, changing the decorations.  I want to be able to feel love for my dog and my friends, and feel connected to the things I care about.

Tuesday
Felt very sad & lonely yesterday.  Went & sat with Lynelle for a little and cried.  Called Karen just to connect.  I even cried when Janet was here (she hugged me) Respite from nausea in the evening but not from heavy-hearted depression.

Wednesday
Session with Caryn.  I lay down & cried as before.  Not as intensely — I felt lost, but not as lost.  I was able to feel anchored by the weight and solidity of the lower half of my body.  Caryn says I’m reorganizing at a very deep level, that’s why I don’t have any energy for surface things.
