Why God Manifested Jenny

(Written at a retreat with Jack Kornfield, December 2008)

Thinking about stories Jack told about “retarded” people, and I thought that was god manifesting in a “retarded” body.  So then I wondered why god had manifested Jenny.  What particular energy did Sacred Unity want in the world and so produced my life?  Celebrating diversity.  Inclusiveness.  Supporting people to be their true selves.  The sacred calendar — using science for celebration.  Creating community celebrations based around traditional village dance.  Actually building a place where all these things could come together, and then subsidizing it out of my own inheritance.  To put money to good use for socially responsible purposes.  And a whole piece about valuing the natural world and concern for the environment.  I always felt badly that I didn’t take more action in the service of these values — well DAMMIT what is action if building & running Neskaya isn’t action?  Then there’s a whole piece about dysfunctional families and emotional pain and trauma and how to heal it.  And it hasn’t been focussed on just my own healing — I did Journey into Courage and educated a lot of people.

Guidance

(Written in January 2009)

Dear Guides & Guardian Spirits, I’m having a pretty hard time just getting through the day.  Can you help me?

Dear Jenny, you are doing just fine.  You are doing the work that you need to do to heal this.  Bringing yourself back to the present, back to your body, over and over, is the work and you are doing it.  We remind you that these strange painful states of lostness and disconnection are something real that you experienced in the past — except that you were overwhelmed and couldn’t process it.  Supporting your self to experience it now is the way to healing, and you are doing it.  These experiences are real, they did really happen, but they are not true now, not the reality of your life now.  You are experiencing them as they leave your body.  You are not “holding on to your pain,” “wanting to be miserable,” or “over-involved with your inner drama,” or any of the other cruel things people have said to you over the years.  You are doing your best to be present to the traumatized baby with compassion.  We love you very much.  Let yourself take it in.

The Story of God Greeting Me at the Gates of Heaven

After searching through all my journals since 2000, I found a reference to this story in February of 2011.  So I suspect it happened sometime in late 2010.  Apparently I never wrote it down at all!

I was feeling bad about myself and my life and that I hadn’t done anything worth while with it.  I thought “What will god think when I arrive with this pitiful harvest.”  I saw myself climbing up steps of cloud toward the pearly gates, with three stalks of wheat in my hands.  Suddenly a creature burst through the gates, looking more like Caspar the Ghost than anything else.  He, she, it or they were wearing a white robe flung over its head with eyeholes cut into it.  This being flew down to me, flung its arms around me and said “WELCOME!  Whatever you have done or not done, welcome!”   O my what a surprise!

I have to say I was very touched by God’s respect for my refusal to give God a gender, so that he/she/it or they came hidden in a sheet.

Journal Writing as a Spiritual Practice

I’ve been keeping a journal since 1959.  Sometime in late 1991 I read Natalie Goldberg’s Writing Down the Bones, and really liked the idea of “writing practice.”  I saw that it was pretty much what I was already doing.  I liked the idea of lighting a candle and setting the timer for 30 minutes.  Timed writings are a great idea, the one constraint is to “Keep the pen moving.”  Spelling doesn’t matter, grammar doesn’t matter, there’s lots of room for creativity.  I also began a number of visual journals, where I did drawings and collage as well as verbal entries.  Most of them were never finished.  I would get started with a burst of enthusiasm, and then get triggered which would stop me in my tracks.  I could still write in my journal because that was a truly safe place.

For more about my journal, see the pages My Journal and Journal Background.

Most writers have had the experience of starting to write out something they have planned ahead, only to have the character suddenly say something completely unexpected and the story had to change course.  Sometimes I have experiences, like the one where I was climbing up the clouds to the pearly gates with my thin harvest, that I write down afterward.  but sometimes the amazing thing happens as I’m writing.  This is true for “Amazing Self-Love” which I published two days ago.  It also happened a lot as I was writing the “Lefthand pages” of The Feminine of History is Mystery.  One writing that still means a lot to me was the one that happened as I was writing a fictional account of a solstice celebration.  I wanted to be there, and I cried out “O my People, are you the past or the future?” and they said “We are both the past and the future, we are where the circle meets itself, never fear, you too are enclosed by the circle.”  At the time I wrote that, I was doing folk-dance, I had even been to Brittany and danced with 100 people in a field to live music, but I had never heard of “Sacred Circle Dance.”  Recently, dancing with my friends, I realized that I had found “my people” and here we were, at the place where past meets future.

“climbing up the clouds to the pearly gates with my thin harvest”  I thought I had posted this story, but can’t find it.  As soon as I can find it, I’ll add it to the blog.

Feeling Good About Myself

(Written in July 2009)

I think of Elizabeth’s letter to me [10/25/05] where she talks about my commitment, my vision and my generosity.  I remember when I first read it, I had a wonderful feeling of “I’ve done it.  I’ve become the person I want to be.” And relief — I don’t have to keep trying so hard.  But it faded.  The conditioning that I’m not good enough is so strong and deep.  I’m thinking of listing all the good things people have said to me, and reading them over and over.  People have suggested that I do this, but I haven’t really taken it seriously.  So:

Rosie saying I’m authentic
Someone in a group at Kripalu saying I’m authentic
Karen: “You’ve done the hero’s journey”
Becca last night, her gratitude for Neskaya
Dancing the sun up at Kripalu — “It was so beautiful – it changed my life.”
Meaghan: “Thank you for teaching me I could learn to dance”
Jane Shapiro blown away by my dancing, my picking up a wasp
Iona saying how beautifully I danced Elohai
Beverly saying I enact my love by embodying truth

I have to find that one, it’s in this year’s journal.  I can find a lot of these in my journal and make another document.  It’s feeling good to write it all down, I still feel odd but warmer and more solid.  Then momentary thought — I’m being conceited — NO! I’m letting myself see and feel my real worth.  What if I really got it that I’m a good person doing good things in the world?  Would I swagger around bragging?  Would I get lazy and stop doing things?  NOT AT ALL.  I would be able to relax.  I would stop pushing myself.  I would stop making myself wrong and being angry at myself for being not good enough.  I might even have more energy for the things I love to do: decorate and care for Neskaya, teach dance programs.

Amazing Self-Love

It’s been tough, trying to negotiate this terrain of the ending of my relationship with Bella.  It occurs to me that I will continue to have a relationship with her spirit, but I will badly miss the furry object who sits warm against me as I write.  I’ve had good days and bad days, and days of low-grade sadness which are the hardest to get through. Karen’s help yesterday allowed me to open this amazing door to self-love.  There was a piece of writing in Resource 2009, where I’m listing good things people have told me, that I contemplated publishing and immediately got scared.  I told Karen I was afraid people would think I was conceited.  Karen said the conceited piece was more in how it was offered, than in the actual words said.  It’s also true that mother tried to kill my enthusiasm for sharing things I was excited about.  That had nothing to do with “thinking I was so great” which is what mother called it.

Karen reminded me that it was OK if I could only enjoy something a little.  Caryn keeps reminding me to rebuild the resource incrementally.  This needs to be a practice, allowing a little bit to be enough.  I see that I make it black-and-white — I have to take it all in, or it’s not good enough.  Even a tiny bit — of resource, of enjoyment, of taking in love — is good enough.

There, there, dear.  and I put my arms around Jenny to comfort her for a life of such struggle.  Some of it she creates herself, but I love her anyway.  She was so badly wounded, and she works so hard.  God bless her.  And I do love her, hugely.  Wow.  That feels so good.  My heart feels relaxed and warm.  Yes, dear, you are a good person, who does much good in the world, but that’s not why I love you.  I love you because you work so hard to heal, and don’t use your wounding to hurt other people.  You long to give the gifts you have, of understanding, and wisdom, and how glorious is the universe that we live in.  I wish you had more opportunities to share these good things, and you are doing your best to find/create them.

To hold myself in love.  What an amazing feeling!  I feel both loving and loved.

Guidance

Written in December 2008

What do I need to hear from some very kind, very loving, very wise being?  Dear, this is too much for you.  It was too much when you were a baby and it’s too much now.  You need to be very kind to yourself.  You need to stop trying to do a task that’s too adult for you right now.  You are putting in so much effort, yes beating your head against the wall, because you believe that this is the only way you have to help the world you love.  You do truly love the world — the world of nature, and the community of human beings that is capable of loving co-operation — you do care, and you have done many things to help the world, not least among them your intention for good.  But right now, you are unable to feel your own caring, your wish and capacity to do good.  You are caught in the pain of a traumatized baby.  Due to circumstances beyond your control, there is no community of support available to you.  Your life has become unworkable, and you need to support yourself with medication, you need to find a medication that works.

Resource Notebook

I mentioned my “Resource notebook” in a previous post.  In Somatic Experiencing a “resource” is a place in your body that feels more comfortable, more centered, more solid.  A resource can also be something that, when you think of it, you feel more relaxed and calm.  My therapist has more than once suggested that I write down all my positive experiences.  One of the reasons for doing this is that I have trouble taking in and remembering positive feedback, because I have no structures in my mind to hold positive experiences.  I do find that reading my Resource notebook is a big help when I’m having a hard time.

I was reading through Resource 2008 and 2009 recently and came across a number of guidance passages that were very helpful.  Some of them have probably already been published in this blog but I don’t see that as a reason for not posting them again.

Right now I’m in some pain and difficulty because my precious dog Bella has been diagnosed with cancer.  I have to say that as an exhibit of a dog that’s going to die soon she’s a disgrace.  Her spirits are good, she eats and drinks well, she runs along on three legs as well as she did on four.  I’m doing my best to enjoy her presence as a gift each day, but sometimes I get depressed, and am unable to enjoy her.  Then of course I get angry at myself for being depressed, and that makes things even worse until I remember to ask myself the question “Are you angry at yourself for being depressed?”  The anger is so automatic, and comes without words or feelings that might let me know I’m angry at myself.  I don’t feel angry, I feel more depressed.

When I read through these guidance passages from 2008, they were so helpful that I thought I’d post them, even if it is the second time.

Dear Guides & Guardian Spirits, I’m feeling very scared about the financial crisis and how I’m going to survive.  Please help me.

Dear Jenny, relax.  You are greatly loved.  We are gathered around you loving you, and you are beginning to recognize that there are many people living right here in this town who care about you and want to support you.  This is what counts and this is what will matter if things get really tough.  Do not dwell on the bad news, and remember that linear projection from current reality never gives a true picture of what will happen.  It is entirely possible that human beings, galvanized by this crisis, will come up with solutions that will work for everybody.  Keep your spiritual compass aimed in that direction and hold that vision.  And remember that, no matter what may happen here on Planet Earth in the next few years, you and all your fellow inhabitants and the planet that you love, are all held safely in the vast compassion that created the universe.  You have had very little experience of this, early trauma has left you with too many experiences of despair and terror, and too few experiences of being safely held by someone/something larger than yourself.  Despite this, your commitment to truth, to your own integrity and healing, to compassion, has brought you a long way from the bleak and broken place you started from, the narrow life of addiction and denial that your parents were living.  Give yourself credit for your high level of commitment and very hard work in the service of healing for yourself and your species and your planet.  Your life and work have not been meaningless, and your continued work to expand the amount of compassion in the universe will never be lost.  We love you and we honor you and we support you.

Ups & Downs

Saturday

Feeling pretty bummed out.  Understanding that part of this is being angry at myself for being depressed again, I try exploring it.

Take a short step back and I see a person who is depressed so she can’t do anything worthwhile, can’t do anything to make the world a better place.  I don’t like her very much.  She should try harder.  That’s why it’s so hard to feel loving toward myself.  She’s not very attractive, not very interesting.  That is the truth about how I see myself.  It makes me want to cry.

Take a big step back.  Here’s this woman.  Her depression is rooted in PTSD, it’s not something she chooses.  Getting out of depression is a tricky business, it can’t be done by willpower.  She works very hard at her practice of being in the present and accepting how she is NOW.

Walking the dog along the river I thought about how I hadn’t been able to find a way to observe myself without judgment.  So I let the angry voice talk: “What’s the matter with you?  You’re just lying around and feeling sorry for yourself and doing nothing worthwhile, nothing that would help make the world a better place.  I’m disgusted!  You should be doing good for others, thinking about others more than self.”  Then I remind myself, as I’ve done before, that this wounded person is herself my task, that my job is to care for her, treat her gently, not try to push her to do things.  I once thought that if I’d been given a clear-cut forest, or a polluted river to care for, I would not be angry at the forest or the river.  I could feel myself softening, surrendering, being OK with not being able to change myself.  I’m finally OK with “doing nothing,” just being here and accepting what is.

One of the hardest things about depression is that it’s self-reinforcing.  Once you start to spiral down, it gains momentum, and whatever skills you might have had for helping yourself disappear in chronic trauma’s loss of the will to live.  Intervention is required, by someone outside, someone trusted, like a therapist, or a good friend who knows what you are going through.  Most of the things people say to you, trying to help, actually make it worse.  “Why don’t you try X… or Y…”  make me feel like here’s another assignment that I’m failing.  Usually I’ve tried X or Y and it didn’t work, actually I’ve tried a huge number of things that didn’t work.

Elizabeth called about 6PM.  She was a big help.  She understands exactly the place I’m in and she cares about me.  She gave me an affirmation:  “Even though I’m horribly depressed and can’t get myself out of it, I still deeply love and affirm myself.”

Sunday

Yesterday was tough.  I was able to soften toward the wounded baby and then wrote about it hoping to do a blog post.  But the energy faded and I went back to feeling myself a worthless blot on the surface of the earth.

This morning Eve called, an old friend and circle dance teacher.  She wanted to come visit and dance at Neskaya.  Oh thank you God!  I went up like a helium balloon, had energy and inspiration for the dance program I had to teach later in the day.

Wisdom from Yitzhak Perlman

Last night was very hot so we did mostly slow dances.  Winds on the Tor, if danced slowly and not holding hands, is conducive to being cooler.  So we did something Laura Shannon called “Yitzhak’s Waltz.”   It was a lovely slow piece and felt wonderful to dance it, waving our arms like the breezes.  This piece of writing came from the Daily Good, a website that sends out one positive story every day.

Yitzhak Perlman, the great violinist, was playing in New York. Yitzhak Perlman was crippled by polio as a young child, so the bottom part of his body doesn’t work well and he wears these very prominent leg braces and comes on in crutches, in a very painful, slow way, hauling himself across the stage. Then he sits down and, very carefully, unbuckles the leg braces and lays them down, puts down his crutches, and then picks up his violin. So, this night the audience had watched him slowly, painfully, walk across the stage; and he began to play. And, suddenly, there was a loud noise in the hall that signaled that one of his four strings on his violin had just snapped.

Everyone expected that they would be watching Yitzhak Perlman put back the leg braces, walk slowly across the stage, and find a new violin. But this is what happened. Yitzhak Perlman closed his eyes for a moment. Yitzhak Perlman paused. And then he signaled for the conductor to begin again. And he began from where they had left off. And here’s the description of his playing, from Jack Riemer in the Houston Chronicle:

“He played with such passion, and such power, and such purity, as people had never heard before. Of course, everyone knew that it was impossible to play this symphonic work with three strings. I know that. You know that. But that night, Yitzhak Perlman did not know that. You could see him modulating, changing, recomposing the piece in his head. At one point, it sounded like he was de-tuning the strings to get new sounds from them that they had never made before. When he finished, there was an awe-filled silence in the room. And then people rose and cheered. Everyone was screaming and cheering and doing everything we could to show how much we appreciated what he had just done. He smiled. He wiped the sweat from his brow. He raised his bow to us. And then he said, not boastfully, but in a quiet and pensive and reverent tone,

“‘You know, sometimes it is the artist’s task to find out how much music you can still make with what you have left.'”

This came from a story on the Daily Good, it’s an excerpt from a book by Margaret Wheatley: A Call to Fearlessness for Gentle Leaders.
