Working on Learning to Love Myself

I have been working on this issue for almost 40 years.

One of the things I used to say over and over to myself was “Nobody ever loved me and nobody ever will.”  I meant romantic love, friends didn’t count.  In 1975 I said this out loud in front of my friend Trudi and she said “What about me?  I love you.”  Later I said it in front of my friend Ron, and he said “What about me?  I love you.” Both their responses blew me away.  The next time I tried to tell myself that nobody loved me, my scientist popped right up with “That’s not true.  Here’s the data: Ron loves me and Trudi loves me.”  The next two names on the list were Miriam and Tony.  I added names until I had a list of about 20 names, and I recited it regularly, and for sure whenever I tried to tell myself “Nobody loves me.” Not so long after that I was in a workshop, and told my roommate about how I was working on learning that there were people who loved me by reciting “Ron loves me, Trudy loves me, Tony loves me, Miriam loves me, …”  When I finished, my roommate said “You can add me to that list.”  I was astonished.  She hardly knew me.

I found this in Richard Rohr: “people who are more transparent and admitting of their blind spots and personality flaws are actually quite easy to love and be with.” Breathing Underwater, p32   This surprised me and helped me see how people could love me.  I think about my own movement of compassion toward people when they admit their faults.  I also think about the many times I’ve said “I’m scared” or “I’m sad” and people have tried to fix me by offering a quick fix because they don’t want to see my pain.  On the other hand, I recently went to a small circle dance group where I am not the teacher.  I said I was depressed and was greeted with a hug and “you’ve come to the right place.”

I did a session with my shamanic coach today.  One of the things we worked on was my perennial difficulty with low self-esteem.  Finding love and compassion for myself continues to be  hard.  Today we were working on my being able to embody my vocation which is (in short) opening people’s hearts by teaching them sacred circle dance.  It was easy to imagine myself dancing with a circle, harder to visualize people loving and thanking me for what I do.  Jim told me to tell Jenny that I love her.  I discovered that it is very hard for me to tell the “Dance Teacher” — who is a very strong and positive part of me — that I love her.  But I thought about all the other parts of me: the scared children, the one who keeps trying to “fix it,” the Astronomy Teacher…  and I realized that it’s much easier to love myself if I include all the parts of me, not just the “good” ones.  I searched my blog for posts when I talked about the “little group of jennys,” and found this:

(Written in 2008) Told Beverly about my project of compiling all the good experiences into a document that I read every day, how feeling good about myself is pushing against the ancient injunction “Don’t think you’re so great.” Sitting here writing I remind myself that my commitment is not just to love the part of me that is “good” but to love all of me: the Shambhala warrior and the traumatized baby, the priestess who leads the dance, and the tough little drip that just wouldn’t quit.  Imagining this little group of Jennys warms my heart. That’s so amazing!  Yes, I welcome all the parts of me in, whatever you have done or not done, I love you all.

For the first appearance of “this little group of jennys”

Imagine my surprise when I read the words “Welcome … what ever you have done, welcome.”  (Written in November 2008) That’s what god said to me at the pearly gates two years later.

Struggle with Anger and Disappointment

I have a friend who’s lived with a man for years, but she’s not happy with him.  He’s an alcoholic who stopped drinking, but never did the work of the twelve steps.  He’s what’s known as a “dry drunk.”  He’s so mean to her.  He doesn’t do it when I’m around.  Yesterday he got going on the social-political-economic mess.  I said a few things in agreement, but R asked him to stop.  I had to agree with her — it’s true that looking at how bad it is tends to send me into despair and hopelessness.  R really doesn’t enjoy living in the same house with him, but she can’t survive on her own.  She’s tried to get a job, but no one wants to hire an older woman.  I said maybe she has some karma to work out.

I realize that I’m in a similar position.  I’m unhappy with my life as it is now — not with the physical part of it which is good, but my prevailing mood of discomfort and disappointment.  I’m stuck with it.  Although I do occasionally have “days of grace” I don’t know how to make them happen.  All I can do is keep doing the practices that create a readiness to receive grace.  These are: the stretches to keep my body limber, walking, getting to bed at a regular time, having body work, reciting affirmations, singing in the choir, dancing at Neskaya, doing my best to stay in the present, typing journal and posting to the blog, spending time with people I can be real with (people I know love me).  One thing that I’ve found really difficult is being present to the states of scared & sad & hopeless & helpless, accepting them, bringing compassion to them.  It’s helpful if I can remember to say “scared is here” rather than “I am scared.”  Sometimes I can see it as a scared child and reach out to comfort it.  The hardest piece is being angry and disappointed with myself for losing the days of grace.  Knowing what it was like to feel comfortable in my life makes it so hard to be without that.  Like today.  I’m “OK,” I’m not really sad or scared, but I don’t feel comfortable either.  Then my job is to accept the discomfort, to put my arms around her and bring compassion to her pain.

I also have my mantra of “I choose to trust … that my life is meaningful, that my healing work on myself helps both people and the planet…”

I’ve also been doing tong-len with whatever feelings I’m struggling with.  I see that I could do it for people who are disappointed with themselves.  I can also work on what I did in last week’s session with Caryn.  Let love in “drop by drop,” from all the people who I know love me.  Allow the nourishing energy of the earth to seep in from below, and then allow the radiance that other people see to flow out into the world.

Keep on Keeping on

Dusting of snow.  Just below freezing.  Pretty totally discouraged.  Driving home last night I could feel how angry I was at myself (Eve said she picked up on it) and I was able to be OK with being angry.  But this morning I feel stuck and angry and discouraged.  Can I be OK with that?  Yes, it’s how I am now.  Can I bring compassion to it?  No.  Can I be OK with not being able to bring compassion?  Yes it’s how I am.  Broken.  One of the bozos on the bus.  I think there must be a lot of people out there who feel just like me: depressed, discouraged, not knowing how they will keep going.  But they aren’t trying to be compassionate about it.  But there must be some of those out there too, people who are trying to find compassion in the midst of misery.  I feel a softening when I think of them.  Sisters in Misery.  I think, can I just sit here, with this tangle of negative feelings and not try to change it?  My shoulders relax.

What do I know?
1) that I haven’t wasted my life
2) that the source of the Universe is spiritual
Would it really make any difference if I stopped trying to make things change?
3) that I’ve done the best I can and that’s enough.

It’s actually above freezing out there.  Sky is grey.  I can just keep on keeping on.  Reading, typing journal, playing Solitaire, hauling wood, washing dishes, etc.  I did want to do a post for Break the Chain.  And I wanted to do one from the day Eve called me in tears and I was able to feel the compassion for her that I couldn’t feel for myself.

Pray for those who are discouraged and depressed and don’t know how they’re going to go on.

Eve said that despite my feeling depressed and discouraged, she could see the one who was not.  I suppose, if that’s true, that I could still be doing good in the world, despite feeling so hopeless and helpless.

Dear Guides and Guardian Spirits, I’m feeling bottom-of-the-pit hopeless.  Can you help me?
Dear Jenny, relax.  You are trying too hard.  You are trying to live up

— Jane just came with food.  I cried & said I was doing really badly.  She said she saw me as a person who reaches out to others.  She said my tears were seeds that would bring forth goodness some time in the future. —

That was guidance, breaking right into my life.  And it’s true that I’m trying to live up to some pathologically high expectation.  Let it go.  Be lazy, be bad, do “nothing.”  Do paintings that are like Tink’s mosaics.  Collages!

“bozos on the bus” is from Joan Borysenko, Fire in the Soul
“Tink’s mosaics” are from Broken for You

“God” vs “Universe”

When I wrote yesterday, I was astonished to find that the universe and god felt so different.  The universe I connect to when I imagine the creative love that becomes the universe, is what I really believe is the REAL universe.  But obviously that belief hasn’t gotten very deep in my psyche.  I’ve been imagining the universe and god being roughly equivalent, and now I find that they aren’t at all.

The different ideas of god and the universe, and the differing experiences of god and the universe.  Sometimes when you change your thinking, your experience changes as well.  I think of the time when these words came out of my mouth: “If I get a PhD in geology, I will be so threatening that no man will want to marry me and my life will be wasted.”  That was so clearly not true that I went out the next day and registered for a geology class.  Sometimes it takes longer.  Thinking of the universe as creative and supportive, is very different from experiencing the support.  My experience is that the universe is huge and impersonal.  But at least my thinking is very solid.  I know that the truth about the universe is that it is unimaginably creative, that it is headed in a positive direction.  But whether or not the universe actually supports me is a little more difficult.  That’s not embodied experience yet.

Then there’s my image of god which has changed from the punitive father god to “capricious, malicious, and willful,” to the god who flew out of the gates of heaven to welcome me.  That image was a surprise.  I had no idea that my knowing about god had changed so radically.  Of course I matter to that god.  But that god also feels small and local, the god of the solar system and the nearer stars, but not god of the galaxies scattered through the enormous distances of space.

I think that the time between changing the thought, and finding that the embodied experience has changed, is related to how deep and old the wound is.  Newer woundings heal very quickly.  Old wounds can take a long time.  I still struggle with the belief that it’s not OK to feel good about myself, and the belief that I have to prove I deserve to live.

I choose to trust…

“Choosing to trust that this life matters and we’re all connected and this is all headed somewhere has made my life way, way better.”
Rob Bell, What We Talk About When We Talk About God.   p125

I’ve modified this for myself into a prayer, or an affirmation, or an intention.  I say it a number of different ways.  I seem to have returned (do I dare say this?) to having “days of grace.”  I’m so thankful, so thankful.

I choose to trust that I matter, and I’m connected to everybody and we’re all headed somewhere.

I choose to trust that I matter to the universe…

Saying that made me realize that I visualize the universe as something much bigger than god, and totally impersonal.  I realize that I see god as local, yes he made the sun and the moon and the stars, but most of the stars we see are our neighbors in the Milky Way galaxy.  I need to improve my idea of the universe and my idea of god.  Actually, I have improved my idea of the universe and god, but it hasn’t become experience yet.

…that I matter to the universe, that the universe needs my shape to be complete, that the universe planted me as a unique seed and waits with delight for the individual who will emerge…

…that we are all connected, that I am connected with everybody, that I am connected with everything…

…that we are all going somewhere, somewhere positive, we are headed for consciousness and compassion, the arc of the universe bends toward peace, justice and sustainability…

My blog post about Rob Bell.

Struggle with Depression

Lord Jesus Christ have mercy on me.
I am a good person and I want what’s best for everyone.
I intend to do the will of god
I intend to be who god designed me to be
I intend to live in the present
I intend to bring compassion to every moment
I am loved and cherished, deeply and totally
There is nothing to fear
There is nothing I can do wrong
There is nothing that can separate me from the love of god.
I offer myself to this process.

Yesterday was pretty bad.  I recited the prayers as something to hang on to. This is such a cold, empty place that I’m in.  It’s a lot like that first winter in Portland, Maine.  I recite my prayer, but the words feel empty and meaningless.  It’s below zero again.  The fuel truck has been filling my tank.

Totally, utterly discouraged.  Feeling like I’ve wasted so much of my life — god wraps its arms around me and says “Welcome!  Whatever you have done or not done, Welcome!”  I become aware that god is not angry about the waste, god feels compassion for my struggle.  I prayed for help — this could be the answer.  I’m trying to stay with God’s compassion for me.  God wants me to have a life like the “days of grace,” God wants me to be happy and fulfilled, using my gifts in service to the community.  God is not angry at me that I’m not there, god has enormous compassion for my struggle.  God tells me that my struggle to heal is how I do god’s work in the world.  It is not meaningless.  Thank you, god, please stay with me.   Of course!  I am always with you.

—the fox is back!  OMG it looks like there are two foxes, one larger than the other!—

[When animals appear just as I’m thinking or writing something, I consider it a message from the shamanic realm.]

Struggling with Fear

Dear Guides and Guardian Spirits, are you there?  I’m feeling bereft of spirit and god.  Can you help me?

Dear Jenny, we love you very much.  We are all around you although we know you can’t feel our presence.  We want to reassure you that you are totally, eternally, safe.  Nothing that you do can separate you from the love of god.  Remember the words that Eben Alexander brought back from “Heaven” —

“You are loved and cherished, dearly, forever”
“You have nothing to fear”
“There is nothing you can do wrong”

Dear Guides & Guardians, I feel safe in my house, there is nothing here that is threatening me, but I’m still scared.  I realize that I feel like I’m living in a civilization that is unsustainable, that is about to collapse.  That’s what I’m afraid of.  I can’t imagine how I would survive.

Dear Jenny, we know that it looks scary, and it is quite true that Western culture is in a total mess.  Nevertheless, there are many beings, visible and invisible, who are working to build sustainable communities.  You are in a better position to survive than those in the cities.  It is not your job to create sustainable community.  It is your job to keep teaching dances and creating celebrations, and doing your healing work.  And when you die you will go straight to that place of enormous love.  There is nothing to fear, and nothing you can do wrong.  We love you!

Much Better!

O gosh so much better.  I took a good look at my schedule for the past months, and saw that I’d been having 2 therapy appointments a week during the time of the days of grace.  I was seeing Claudia while Caryn was away.  Lynelle suggested I do that again, but I thought I was doing well enough (!)  That old old pattern.  I think “I’m fine now,” and stop doing what was helping.  I felt so much better after seeing that.  I have a good chance of getting to more days of grace.  This last week was especially hard because Karen left and Caryn wasn’t back yet.  So I need to make more appointments for the next weeks while Karen is away.  I reread my prayer to God to make it easier, and see that it was answered.  Thank you!

My Life is Unmanagable, I Surrender

Tired and slow.  A little discouraged.  I called both Eve and Barbara, and they didn’t call back.  No matter what I did: read, play solitaire, I could feel the sadness like a weight in my heart.  I did try to just sit with it too.

After supper, Lynelle and I had a visit.  I told her about the song we sing “I’m gonna live so god can use me,” and how I find it hard to see that god can use me when I’m so depressed.  Lynelle said she thought that just keeping going was helping god.  She said she thought that god wasn’t finished yet, and our work helps with that task.  Just choosing for compassion, instead of anger, blame, etc. is helping god.

I’m grateful for Lynelle, for Barbara, for Eve, for Dr. Dean.  I’m grateful for Victoria and the choir, and for Tom.  I’m grateful for the sun and the moon and the snow.  I’m grateful for Jane and Lana.  I’m grateful for Karen and Caryn.  Grateful for sky and trees, for chickadees and bluejays, for goldfinches.

I’m feeling heavy, especially in the middle of my torso, and a slight nausea feeling, more emotional than physical.  There’s a little sadness, and some fear and discouragement about how humans are poisoning the earth.  Bring compassion, hold all that angst with compassion.

There’s pain all over my body.  It doesn’t feel like coming down with flu. I wonder if this is the pain in the emotional body that Elizabeth talks about.  While I was doing my stretches, I thought that one of the things God needs me to do is help heal the human energy field by my work on healing myself.  If that’s true, then I’m willing to feel this pain and to bring compassion to it.  At the moment I feel very solidly that that is true.  Usually, when I’m able to accept/know that I am helping the earth, it makes me feel better.  It’s not doing that today, even though my knowing is very solid.  But it doesn’t matter how I feel, what does matter is I am willing to have god use me in this way.

This was written a month ago.  This last month has been so unbelievably difficult.  I’m totally discouraged, feeling exhausted, also feeling unreal somehow, I’ve been alone too much.  It’s when I’m alone that I really go downhill.  I read what I said, about being willing to be used by god to help heal the human energy field.  I said “I’m willing to feel this pain and bring compassion to it.”  I didn’t realize it was going to be so difficult.  Now I pray to God that this is too much for me, please send me some help, or make it easier somehow.

Sad and Disappointed

(There were no more “days of grace” after this journal entry.)

The word “bleak” occurred to me this morning.  The first time in a month.  But I don’t think I’m bleak so much as sad and disappointed.  The weekend was tough.  Church did not cheer me up because Barry and Victoria were both gone.

— Just saw the cardinals! —

I was thinking about writing down my intentions when they appeared.

(2/12)  I intend to shift to positive thinking before I even get started down a negative path.   I intend to bring compassion to whatever is there in the moment.  I intend to stay in the present.

(2/21)  I intend to live in the moment, to be fully present to each moment.  I intend to do the will of god.  I intend to be very very kind to myself.

Lynelle said because Linda, Pat, Barbara, Eve, Barry are all away, I’m having a hard time.  This is big, having so many support people away.  That helped me be more compassionate toward myself.

Yesterday, feeling totally powerless, I reminded myself: I don’t create or choose depression, and I can’t make it go away.  All I can do is keep doing practices: staying in the moment, bringing compassion, etc.

As I ask God to remove the depression and redirect me to what He would have me do and be — I wonder if depression is part of what god wants me to be?  Surely not, surely god wants me to thrive.  The first “day of grace,” I felt that I was finally who I really am.  The depression is just an obstacle, or a teaching challenge.  In order to be who I really am, I have to persist in the practices that get me there.
