A New Look at the “Voice from the Past”

Found a passage written in June of ‘96, when I was in the pit of despair & trying to find things to help me hold on.  I posted it in May 2010.  I’ve since posted pieces of it with commentary from the present. Thought it was time to post the whole thing again with new understandings.

June 3, 1996
I tried praying again last night, even though I have no sense of any beings out there to pray to.  I keep calling, but no one appears.  Mostly attempts at prayer feel like desperate pleas for help to an unhearing Void.  I keep praying because I don’t know what else to do.

Compare these lines from a poem I wrote at the time of Journey Into Courage.  It’s called Blood and Stone:

I am open and vulnerable in my need for love, in my childish
attempts to make it better, take your pain away, do
something, anything that might win from you a smile.
I offer you my heart’s blood and you remain a stone.
Blind, you crush my eager efforts to show you who I am.
Slowly, gradually, I learn to close and harden.
It was someone else you wanted.

Mommy and Daddy, if I cut myself and wrote you in blood
would you listen?

I’m recognizing once again that my basic fear is that nothing will change if I don’t make conscious efforts to make it change, and I don’t know what to do.  Actually, that’s not entirely true.  I am making conscious efforts: to exercise, to do continuum and yoga, but I don’t know if they will actually “work”, that is if they will ever result in feeling better.

I’ve been trying to not focus on feeling better, but on asking myself what is worth doing even if I don’t feel better.  I think Neskaya is worth doing, even if I am building for a future that may never happen, it’s still worth doing.  And certainly it’s an action toward creating the sort of world I want to live in.  As for myself, if the soul is immortal, then I hope I’m building in some character traits that will be useful to the next person who emerges out of this particular soul.  Otherwise, all this suffering will be really meaningless.

Then I get angry at myself for referring to this life as “all this suffering”.  Other people envy me, would like to have my life.  Yes, but they see only the externals, they certainly wouldn’t want to have my insides.  What good is it to have a loving husband and a lot of money and a beautiful house if I can’t enjoy them?  I don’t know how to answer that question.

I remind myself of what Eleanor said the other day.  She was terrified about her therapist and I was having my usual hard time.  I took her back to her apartment, and when it was time to go I could hardly bear to leave her.  I hugged her again, with tears in my eyes, saying “I don’t understand why we keep on going, when it’s so hard and painful — what’s the point?”  She said “I keep going by thinking that God needs our help.  When we don’t give up, and don’t kill ourselves, then that’s refusing to allow the darkness to take over.” I haven’t got her words quite right, but it was something like that.  I got the sense that even when we fail to win any kind of victory, just refusing to be defeated is some help in the battle — assuming that there really is a battle of the forces of light against the forces of darkness.

Eleanor’s words: “I keep going by thinking that God needs our help.”  She was hideously abused in her childhood, but she sounds like Etty. See previous post for Etty’s ideas about helping god.

I had an insight, a while back, that consciousness, consciously holding a vision, was a kind of strange attractor that could — not control the chaotic forces of life — but direct them in some way, or at least move them closer to the desired outcome.  So therefore, holding on to a vision is important, even if there aren’t any “good feelings” or any hope that the desired outcome could manifest.  I’d feel better if I were more in touch with my own vision. What do I want?  I want to feel connected to my life, engaged in it, involved with it.  I want to have some sense that my daily activities are meaningful even if I don’t know what that meaning is.  I want to feel my rootedness in the divine, so I can move from a place of peace and wisdom instead of fear.  I want to feel connected to my friends, and to be able to support them to the best of my ability.  What about my creativity, the books I was going to write?  I guess what I want is to offer my creative gifts to the Great Powers of the Universe to be used as and when they see fit.  And I would also like to have some sense that those Great Powers are — what? I hate to say “good” or “beneficent”, that seems too limiting, as though the Great Powers were concerned with my material security and happiness, as though the Great Powers were constrained by human ideas of “good” — when I know they can be wild and unpredictable and demanding of larger visions, bigger efforts than would be consistent with “security” or “happiness”.  I think I want to be reassured that the Great Powers are not blind, unintelligent, malicious, mean, but that they are tending toward some vision of greatness, wholeness, divinity, some dazzling truth or beauty or compassion that would call forth my reverence and willingness to sacrifice my health or happiness or life for such a cause.  When have I ever had that sense, of a Universe big enough, spiritual enough, to enlarge my soul and lift me out of my petty concerns?  I can’t think of anything recent, but I know there are times written in my journal.  I think of thunder and wind and fire, and the hands of God, at the time of Fiona’s death.  I think of the “blazing and storm-shattered” maples at Kripalu and my sense of wanting it all, wanting a whole life, both the glory and the pain.

“Consciously holding a vision” comes from the ideas of Robert Fritz.

Wanting both the glory and the pain reminds me of Etty saying “Things are very bad and very good at the same time.” I am amazed when I read what I wrote.  I would have said I never had any experience of glory and pain as a whole, but here it is.  Somehow it never got integrated into my memory.  Probably too contradictory with the rest of my experience.

But mostly my experience of the universe is that it’s at best unhelpful, at worst malicious, that it’s set me some hard and difficult assignment, refused to give me help with it or even make it clear what the assignment is, it has some expectation of me that I keep failing to fulfill, it’s just waiting to punish me badly for every mistake and sneer at my attempts to do something “good”, to make something “beautiful”.  Well, I see that I’m not describing the Universe at all, but my childhood experience of Mom & Dad, where I kept failing to satisfy their expectation, and got no help or guidance at all, just sneers and invalidation when I ran into trouble.  I can’t believe that the Universe is like this.  Surely the One who made daffodils is capable of more compassion and support than that.  It seems like I’ve got so entirely caught in the world conditioned by my parents that I’ve completely lost my sense of some bigger wider universe, where compassion and support and abundance are available, and especially support for being one’s “big self”, living one’s big life, really using and living out of one’s creative power and strength.  I see how afraid I am of being punished and abandoned if I dare to live out of my real power.  Gosh that makes me mad!  Something showed up in my dream — I am being restricted by my parents’ “post-hypnotic” suggestion to live the kind of life that would have made them comfortable, not the kind of life my soul is capable of.

It makes me mad that I have to keep coming to this insight over and over.  I stopped thinking of the fear states as being related to infancy with my mother because a) if that was really it, they should have stopped with the realization, b) I’m wrong to blame my spiritual failures on Mom, c) I’m tired and bored with the whole thing, d) Valerie Hunt says the fear comes from soul problems stemming from past lifetimes not from childhood trauma in this one.  But the truth is, going over the whole thing in detail again again, writing down exactly what the fear feels like and then seeing how it matches my childhood, results in me feeling much less fearful, much more stable, seeing beyond the shoulders of my parents’ shadows to the possibility of a real Universe, big enough, wild enough, creative enough, compassionate enough, to meet my Soul’s need.

In 2019, I looked at this piece and saw how wrong my ideas wore and did a post in which I say:
This is a story that keeps me stuck.  “I stopped thinking of the fear states as being related to infancy with my mother because… a) “if that was really it, they should have stopped with the realization.”  Intellectual understanding doesn’t end a belief unless it’s very recent.
b) “I’m wrong to blame my spiritual failures on Mom.”  I never blamed Mom for my difficulties, I always saw that it was my job to heal the damage.
c) “I’m tired and bored with the whole thing.”  Because I can’t see how to go on.
d) “Valerie Hunt says the fear comes from soul problems stemming from past lifetimes not from childhood trauma in this one.”  What made her the expert?  I think my acceptance of her statement is me being willing to trivialize my experience.  It will be about 5 years before I understand that I was traumatized.  The story that I was traumatized in infancy makes sense of my life and gives me a way to work on healing.

I suppose it’s possible that the fear and the disorientation right now are so great because I’m refusing to do anything at all any more to placate those angry childhood gods.  I think the full collapse came when I stopped typing up my journals, when I gave up the hope that I would one day publish a book that would “justify my life.”  If I ever had published “Written in Blood” it would have made my parents very unhappy, so I was unable to see that it still represented an achievement that is acceptable in their world.  For some reason I don’t see building Neskaya as an “achievement” or a “justification for my life”, though I am sure, to many people looking from the outside, it would be just as much that as publishing a book.  But it’s not, I think because the motivation had nothing to do with “justifying my life”, but rather with needing the right sort of place to do these activities that are of spiritual importance to me, so much importance that I am willing to sacrifice some amount of comfort in living and my future security in order to build it.  (Added later) YES, DAMMIT, and isn’t that courage?  Instead I put myself down (my father’s internalized voice) for being foolish.

“I often say of Neskaya that it’s the most selfish thing I’ve ever done, that it’s what my heart most wanted to do.” From a post on Cynthia Bourgeault called “A Midwife for the Divine.”

Etty Hillesum and “God”

I have been reading the Letters and Diary of Etty Hillesum.  She was a Dutch Jew, and began writing a journal at the suggestion of Julius Spier, who was her teacher, therapist, and lover.  She died in Auschwitz in November 1943.  I came across this passage written on December 21, 1941:

From Etty, p197

Great confidence, truly great confidence, has very slowly been maturing in me of late.  Feeling safe and secure in Your hands, oh God.  I am no longer cut off quite so often from that deep undercurrent within me.  And when I feel fervent and elated, then it is neither forced nor wayward but based on the certainty of that undercurrent.  Nor do I still keep bumping into the sharp corners of the day.

Much as one should not set about studying a person with rigidly fixed ideas, so one should also not do that with a book, a day, a meal, or anything else.  If I begin this Sunday by remembering the last one and believing that this one is going to be another glorious Sunday just like it, then the day is bound to go wrong.  I should be doing it an injustice, fixing it with my own preconceived ideas.  I wouldn’t be giving it a chance to develop along its own lines.  I am very slowly beginning to accept that, and as a result I am becoming freer and freer, learning not to inhibit the growth of anything, be it a person, or a day, or a book, or God Himself, or myself.  Inhibition must be distinguished carefully from creative intervention.  From the struggle to express oneself.

The process she’s describing sounds a lot like my attempts to follow Tosha Silver’s program and my difficulty in letting go.

From Wikipedia:

Hillesum addressed God repeatedly in her diaries, regarding him not as a saviour, but as a power one must nurture inside of oneself: “Alas, there doesn’t seem to be much You Yourself can do about our circumstances, about our lives. Neither do I hold You responsible. You cannot help us, but we must help You and defend Your dwelling place inside us to the last.”

My biggest difficulty is not understanding “God” as a power inside of myself, but instead seeing “God” as a capricious, malicious, and willful omnipotent being, who pays no attention to me. I am restricted by a belief I described in 1996:

Even the Algae are Fighting to Save Planet Earth

Today I’m feeling very lonely and unconnected.  “Nobody ever loved me and nobody ever will.”  I used to think that on a regular basis until two friends said “That’s not true, I love you.”  I did my best to change it, but it still recurs periodically.  Went to my blog to see if I could find something hopeful, and read “Circle of Hope.”  It definitely raised my spirits.

Here’s my letter of thanks to all those who responded:

Friday, 10:12AM What if?   From Neskaya

What if 1,000 butterflies all flapped their wings at once? I feel reconnected with an organism that has a thousand hands to send help and a thousand legs to dance with.  If particles of light synchronize their vibrations, it’s called a laser, and you know it’s powerful.  If a bunch of people move in synchronicity, it’s called “Circle Dancing”.
I have just had the lovely experience of writing 27 email replies to dear friends, old friends, absent friends and people I haven’t even met yet who are now part of my electronic dancing circle.  My friends, we span the globe: I heard from Bali, France, and Argentina, not to mention Mexico and California.  I’ve copied all your replies into one document so I can read it again when I feel discouraged. But I have to say that all together we are doing something more than just lighting individual candles in the darkness.

I was reminded yesterday of something that gave me great hope at the time, but there was a further lesson to be drawn from it:  there’s a business called Ocean Arks, that designs systems to deal with various kinds of water waste — like the Living Machines in Burlington and at Findhorn that deal with sewage.  John Todd designed a system for a candy company, to handle 10% of their waste…
“One Friday a computer malfunctioned and sent 100 percent of the waste in to the eco-machine, overloading the system.  “A godawful mess — foam, fats, oil, dead fish — everywhere,” says Todd.  Disgusted employees turned off the pumps and went home for the weekend.  But when they returned on Monday, the eco-machine had rebalanced itself.  “They were so startled by this self-healing; that’s what turned the tide and allowed us to continue with other projects,” says Todd, who confesses surprise himself.”  (from story in Hope Magazine, Jan/Feb 2004, written by Sarah Tuff)

This is Gaia, in small, an eco-system that’s capable of handling an overload of toxic stuff.  Humans created the mess, but humans also designed the solution and when they did something magical happened: nature joined the fight. One-celled creatures and plants and fish somehow cooperated to deal with the mess. Guess what, everybody – WE ARE NOT ALONE.  Even the algae are fighting to save planet earth. Nature is on our side and ready to help the moment we open the door — remember the 40 pound cabbages at Findhorn, and the rainforest that’s regenerating under the pines of Gaviotas.  There’s this huge process working toward health, awareness, consciousness, compassion – and it’s bigger than we are, big as the planet, maybe even big as the universe (Today I believe for sure as big as the universe) and our circle dancing community is part of it.  We are part of how the human community re-balances itself — we don’t have to know how, all we have to do is keep on doing what we do.

So KEEP DANCING EVERYBODY.

Vast amounts of love to all of you from Jenny at Neskaya

From 1994-5: Numerology

from my journal for December 1994

I’ve been wanting to write about the information in the Numerology books — recommended by a friend, I ordered them for Dana and wrapped them for Christmas.  Looking them over, I see that Numerology can be as elaborate and complex as astrology.  There is a wonderful chart of descriptive words for the energies of each number as manifested in personality, divided according to overbalanced, balanced, and underbalanced energy.  For example, for number 1, keywords INDIVIDUATION, INDEPENDENCE, ATTAINMENT, it gives for overbalanced energy: aggressive, antagonistic, etc; for balanced energy: achieving, active, etc; for underbalanced energy: changeable, compliant, etc.

Goodwin says there are four important elements of what he calls the core — “the major determinant in the character delineation.”  These are 1. Life Path — from the date of birth, 2. Expression — from the letters of the birth name, 3. Soul Urge — from the vowels of the birth name, and 4. Birthday — the day of birth only.  He says to add each element & reduce it and then add those numbers, rather than just adding all the digits.  Doing it his way, I come out with a 22 life path and a 22 soul urge which is pretty intense.

He calls 22 the “Master Builder” and says “The subject must learn the ultimate mastery of combining the highest of ideals with the enormous power to achieve the largest of material goals.”  Under characteristics he lists: extremely capable, practical, unorthodox, charismatic, nervous tension.  Under negative expression he says “The negative 22 may turn his powers to his own selfish use”, which I haven’t done, I sound more like the other manifestation: “An occasional 22 is overwhelmed by his powers and retreats from them.  He may accomplish little, feel frightened by the world around him, uncomfortable with his nervous tension.”  He also says “You will look for a long time before you find a 22 accomplishing anything even vaguely close to his potential.  Mostly, the 22 is in process, trying to handle the forces which feel too powerful to handle, trying to live with the tension which accompanies these forces.  The latent power of the 22 will be obvious to all.  People may shake their heads and wonder why he didn’t do more with his potent energies.  He will often be difficult to live with or deal with — he is so aware, so perceptive, so capable — and often so frustrated at not being able to put all the pieces together.”  (p248)

This was a bit of a shock, especially as it resonated with all my unvalidated feelings of having enormous power, and my guilt about “wasting” this potential which I can’t quite believe I have.  Just reading this description has given me a new sense of my own power that feels very grounded, very accurate.  It’s like yes, I am very powerful, and it has been very difficult learning how to grasp and focus this power, and it feels like building Neskaya has been the first real opportunity to make use of it.

January 95

I added up the numbers for NESKAYA (5+5+1+2+1+7+1) and it’s a 22!  This new information about myself — that is my life path and my soul urge being 22 — has been extremely reassuring.  That sense of potential greatness that I’ve had is true, and the major difficulties associated with manifesting that greatness are true too.  Instead of feeling like a failure, I feel like I’m doing well with a difficult assignment.  And even before I did the numbers for Neskaya, it did seem that that was the perfect expression of a 22-Master Builder.  In some ways, it seems like more my building than Dana’s, I was the one who said “Let’s build it.”  It’s my money that’s paying for it.

Today, June 25, 2023:  Really astonishing to read this now, when I’m having such a hard time, feeling hopelessly inadequate. Especially this part: “An occasional 22 is overwhelmed by his powers and retreats from them.  He may accomplish little, feel frightened by the world around him, uncomfortable with his nervous tension.” (p248) Yes, that’s exactly where I am, except that I have no sense of having any power at all.

Trying to “Surrender” Doesn’t Work

This should have been posted right after my description of following Tosha Silver’s process, which I called The Real Universe. But I didn’t know what to say after saying that my attempts were “horribly unsuccessful.” Then I got distracted by Mocha’s trouble, and I stopped trying to hand my life over because it clearly wasn’t working. But I need to publish this explanation.

Written in June 1996:

This is what I’m experiencing again, as I’ve been trying to follow Tosha Silver’s advice. It’s a version of “Let go and let God,” or “Thy will be done.” Letting my life live me rather than me being in charge. But my attempts to live that way have been horribly unsuccessful. It’s almost funny if it weren’t so painful. In this writing from 1996 I clearly don’t trust god. I think that, for reasons I don’t fully understand, when I tried to follow Tosha Silver’s advice to surrender to the Divine, it didn’t work.  She says “Let things happen as they are meant to” which is a little like “I offer myself to this process,” no “god”language.  I’m afraid the God language conjures up that “Capricious, Malicious, and Willful” being based on Mom. So of course I don’t trust that being.

A friend suggested I was trying to control what was happening. That made me feel horribly uncertain. I know I was trying consciously to “surrender,” but there may have been an unconscious agenda. If that was true, no wonder the process didn’t work.

Dialogue between Wounded and Feisty

from my journal for Thursday, June 22

Dear Inner Teacher, I desperately need some help.

Dear Jenny, you are so hard on yourself.  You are harder on yourself than you are on anyone else.  And you judge yourself without mercy.  This is why it’s hard for you to feel the mercy of god.  Dear Jenny, you have some wonderful strengths and talents, and many deep wounds.  You have done an enormous amount of work in your life, trying to heal, struggling to use your talents despite severe wounds.  Yes, we spirits gather round you, we love you and admire you for the work you have done.  We also have tremendous compassion for your struggle.  You need to find some compassion for yourself.

Thank You.     I remember how I always have compassion for people who are having a hard time.  But it’s so hard to do it for myself.  I have a sense that my life has been one long battle between the fierce one who wants to use her talents, and the wounded one who just wants to rest and do nothing.

3rd cup. coffee.     So walking Mocha, I tried to have a dialogue between our different ideas of where to go.  And I tried to have a non-verbal conversation between the wounded one and the feisty one.

Feeling confused and overwhelmed.  Let’s try a dialogue:

Wounded jenny:  I am just too tired to try to give the gabapentin to Mocha, and I’m not sure it’s a good idea.  I need to talk to Dr. Fisher.

Feisty jenny:  You’re too tired?

W: actually I’m feeling scared and clumsy.  Afraid I’ll do it wrong.

F: it can’t be that hard.  It’s not like giving a shot.

W:  I think what I need is validation not advice.

F:  oh! right.  I’m not really good at that.  You’re feeling clumsy?

W: yeah.  I feel shaky and weak.  Sometimes it comes on when I walk Mocha.

F:  It sounds like a tangle, hard to unravel the threads.  I wonder if I’ve just bullied you through in the past.  I remember when Erica was upset that you went to see Kendal alone.  She thought you should have had support.

W: I don’t remember even being consulted about that one.  I must have been dissociated.

F:  I have to remember you do that.  You’re not in charge, you’re triggered.

W:  that’s right.  That’s one of the effects of trauma.

I remember when I got scared writing big checks for the construction of Neskaya.  I sat myself down and reminded myself that I really do want Neskaya to happen.  Then I could make myself write the check even tho scared.

F:  so don’t you really want to show Sacred Sites?

W:  I’m afraid I’ll make a mistake.  I’ve already made a couple of mistakes this morning.

F:  disastrous ones?

W:  Well — not really.

F:  I think you’re much too hard on yourself.

W:  You’re a fine one to say that to me!

F: You have a point.  But my criticisms are not that you’ve made a mistake, but that you haven’t stood up for yourself.  I can see that anger doesn’t work so well with you, encouragement is better.

What’s Holding Me Back?

From my journal for Monday, June 19

I tried to talk to the part that’s making me so scared.  I got little bits of dialogue before I actually sat down to write it.

Me:  how old are you?

Part:  Twelve

Me: why are you angry at me?

Part:  Because Daddy kept coming in at night and feeling my breasts, and it took you so long to do anything.

Me: yes, I remember one time “O no not this again,” and I groaned and turned over and he left and never came back again.  So he did it lots of times?

Part:  YES

Me: I think I must have dissociated, like I disappeared the nasty things mother said to me.  I am sorry.  I didn’t mean to make you experience it.  Did you experience what Mom did?

Part: She never touched me.

Me: so maybe another part took care of those. Well, you have a right to be angry.  I don’t remember feeling angry, I remember thinking that I was not good/attractive enough for any men better than the sleaziest.

Part: yes and I was angry at you for that. You kept on believing you are unattractive.

Me: so why are you making me scared now when I’m trying to take care of Mocha, and wanting to hand my life over to God?

Part: God? God’s just like Daddy.

Me: Yes, that’s just what I felt as a kid.  Then I stopped believing in god.

That was as far as I got on Monday.  Something about the part felt familiar to me.  Her feisty energy.  I realized I had seen something like that recently. In the most recent post, there was a link to the Torah of Jenny. In it, I talk about a “fierce feisty part of me.” “Angry, spunky, outrageous.” “Whoever that feisty little person inside is, she knows what she wants to say.” Work on the Torah was “really freeing up that rebellious, obnoxious, feisty energy.” I realize that I need her now.  She may be angry at me, but she’s angry on my behalf, for not standing up for myself, for failing to value myself.  I’ve been hoping to give my audio-visual presentation, Sacred Sites of Ancient Keltia, to the community here at a Kendal, but I’ve somehow lost my confidence. I need the feisty one to give me a boost of energy. I did it when I was first here, enjoyed doing it, it was well received.  So it’s odd that I’ve lost my confidence.

The description of the one who is dealing with not being forgiven resonates with this situation. Losing my confidence in my ability to present something that I have done well and enjoyed many times, sounds a lot like the description of the effects on a person of not being forgiven: “recrimination, isolation, and shame.”

Crashed and Burned

This feels a lot like the previous post.  The text is taken from the post “Trying to Integrate the Past” posted on February 16, 2017

Thursday, January 5, 2017

Feeling a little cranky, angry? unhappy?  No, I think there’s anger there. I’m lost and confused.  I don’t understand what’s going on with me.  I’m not even sure who I am.

I was thinking that I have lost myself, fallen out of the story of my life, and wouldn’t it be possible to meet the day as a new thing and start to explore what my life is now?  A fresh start.  But it doesn’t feel like a fresh start.  It feels like I’ve crashed and burned and am just lying here in the ruins — no, that’s not the right metaphor — flung from the vehicle as it crashes and burns.  Now, how do I pick up the threads of my life?  What do I want?  What I want is to have some sense of central flow, or a path or a direction.  What would that feel like?  I would feel like I was being carried by something bigger than myself, and that there would be clear guidance for what to do next.

Thinking about going through old pictures with Christia and showing her the Torah of Jenny — thinking of the things left out of the Torah — marriage, divorce, dad’s death…  I see an image of stuff being shaken up, shaken loose, stuff from the past, that’s been all packed together, being shaken up, shaken apart, so I can decide what to keep and what to get rid of.  It’s a time out to deal with the past.  There’s a way in which I never have dealt with it.  I have no positive memories of the past, no good places to revisit.  I’ve always pushed on ahead, trying to get away from the pain, trying to find a life that worked for me, trying to heal those early deep wounds.  I see that I want/need a container, a hospital or a nunnery, where there are other people around, where meals are prepared, so I can stop fighting the daily battle and turn my energy to integrating the past.  I see it as being like traumatized memory, undigested fragments and chunks, no coherent story.  So my job is to construct a meaningful & coherent & usable narrative of my life.

What do I want to do.  A question I ask only rarely.  Usually it’s what do I have to do, what’s next on the schedule.  If it could be any way at all?  I’d be part of a group of people, and I’d be OK.

Confused and Miserable

Written in writing group last night:

I’ve been so confused.  Feeling miserable.  Can’t identify feelings.  I’ve been at cross-purposes with Mocha.  I wanted to go over to Rivercrest and she did her thing of crouching and pulling back.  So we went around Scattergood.  Mostly I just let her go where she wanted to go.  But sometimes I need to go in a particular direction.  I hate having to fight with her about it.  I don’t like feeling angry with her and I don’t know what to do about it.

I went out this morning to go by the Vet’s to get her weighed — alas she’s still 16.4 lbs which is heavy and I know she thinks I’m not giving her enough.  Then I went down to West Lebanon Feed & Supply.  Elizabeth’s friend, the homeopathic Vet, recommended some frozen food that’s very healthy and online it said Lebanon Feed carried it.  But it turns out they have to special order it.  So I ordered 2 3-pound bags.  But the whole morning I felt scared.  I even felt really strange when I got back to my apartment it didn’t seem familiar.  Elizabeth’s friend Cecille recommended a lot of things and I wrote them down and went looking for things online.  One part of me wanted to do everything I can for Mocha, but another part of me was afraid I’m simply too tired to do much.

I’ve had a lot of odd thoughts running through my mind, and songs, things like Mrs Robinson, there was another one.  I keep trying to change them to the metta prayer, may all beings be held in lovingkindness, may I be held…, may Mocha be held… , may all beings be held…  Sometimes I can hold on to it for a long time.  Sometimes I lose it and it’s back to “… in the pantry with your cupcakes…  any way you look at it you lose.”   and there’s a line about Jesus “… Jesus loves you more than you will know…”  I wondered if that was the message I was trying to give myself.

Reading Cynthia Bourgeault’s The Wisdom Way of Knowing and realizing why circle dance helped so much and what a loss it is that I don’t have it any more.  I feel so far from Spirit and don’t see any way to connect.  And then I feel cross again.  No sense of compassion, peace, calmness, not even relaxation.  I keep feeling like I am doing everything wrong.

Note: Bourgeault talks about the necessity to to do spiritual practice from three centers: the body, the mind, and the “heart.” I put “heart” in quotes because she gives a different definition. We usually think of the heart in terms of emotions, but she says that the heart is “an organ for the perception of divine purpose and beauty.” p34

O yes, there’s a possibility that I’ve been taken over by a part.  I tried to have a conversation with her.  Don’t know what to do with that either.

The sun is shining through the leaves of the tree just outside the window.  The light is coming sideways so there’s a lot of contrast almost a sparkle and a sense of depth seeing through to the trunk of the tree.  It’s beautiful.  I take a deep breath and relax.  It’s such a relief to see/feel beauty.

“… hiding in the pantry with your cupcakes.”

Forgiveness

I have been reading Christina Baldwin’s book called Life’s Companion; Journal Writing as a Spiritual Quest.  In the chapter on Forgiveness she describes what happens to people who refuse to forgive, and what happens to people who are not forgiven.  I was surprised and then validated by the descriptions.

from Life’s Companion, p197

When you will not forgive someone, you fill your life with resentment, paranoia, isolation, righteous indignation, vindictiveness, and false assurance that your perceptions and actions are justified because of the wrong that has been done you.You withhold yourself from human community because you perceive, or at least hope, you are not as imperfect as the rest of us and you don’t want to associate too closely with our unforgivable flaws.

When you are unforgiven, your life is filled with recrimination, self-abuse, isolation, fear of further accusation, shame that you have done something considered unforgivable. You withhold yourself from human community because you perceive, or are afraid, that you are more imperfect than the rest of us and that you can never make enough amends to be a fully acceptable member of the human family again.

The first paragraph is a good description of my mother. I remember once reading the words “resentment and self-pity” and realizing they were an exact description of her.

I didn’t realize that she never forgave me until I saw the movie Mommie Dearest. Here’s what I wrote in 2011:

My mother did not know how to forgive, and so I learned that I was unforgivable.  If I did something “wrong” there was no way I could make amends.  This resulted in some odd behavior that I see as shameful now — an example: I lost my cousin’s bike and never apologized or offered to buy her a new one.  I went into denial about the whole thing, disappeared it, made it not happen.  It was only much later that I remembered several such incidents, and I fear there are more that I’ve completely forgotten.  I was so ashamed that I could barely look at them, much less try to make amends.  Then I saw the movie “Mommie, Dearest” where Joan Crawford’s daughter apologizes for waking her during her afternoon nap.  Crawford doesn’t say “That’s all right, I still love you, you’re forgiven,” she says harshly “Well just don’t do it again.” Lights went on for me.  I realized that when apology was unacceptable, there was no “right” action but not to have done it in the first place.

I also wrote a description of how I didn’t want to be if I was ever a mother. I had noticed that Mother seemed to hold a grudge forever, and decided firmly that I didn’t want to do that.

The description of the person who is never forgiven exactly describes what I have been up against all these years. I think of my need to “prove I deserve to live.” I think of my feeling of being defective all my life until  I learned about Children of Alcoholics, and realized I had learned dysfunctional behavior from a pair of alcoholics. But the feeling of being defective is a kind of default that I can easily fall back into.
