Little Jenny with the Dar Gorani Look

This picture was taken when I was six years old.  Alas, I lost or mislaid the original, so this is a scan of a copy — not very high quality.

“Little Jenny with the Dar Gorani look” was named by a circle dancer who saw this photograph.  Dar Gorani is a dance choreographed to Armenian music, using traditional Armenian gestures.  We also call it the “prayer to the lost homeland” because it’s about being driven out of your home, and looking back to its beauty, and forward to the hope that you will be able to create a new home.  In this picture I see a child who knows that somewhere out there is a better way to live, but where she is right now there is just the pain of not really being seen and supported by her alcoholic parents.

Venus and Jupiter

Wednesday, March 7
(Picture is from earthsky.org)
Last night I was looking at Jupiter and Venus in the western sky.  Venus has been moving really fast to catch up with Jupiter.  (Venus is the really bright one, lower down, Jupiter is not so bright and up to the left.)  When two planets get that close, especially if one of them is as bright as Venus, it’s like a message, like calligraphy in an unknown and sacred language, a wake up call, the “writing on the wall.”  Jupiter is traditionally known as the “greater benefic”  i.e. the big good guy, and Venus as the “lesser benefic” — now, how do I translate that? — the smaller good girl?  Yes, but she’s a lot brighter now.  How about the big good goddess?

Seeing them blazing in the sky made me think of the conjunction of Tarva and Alambil in the Narnian sky in Prince Caspian.  “Some great good for the sad realm…”  On the simplest level, Jupiter is expansion and Venus is love.  Expanding love can only be good for us and our planet.
From Prince Caspian, given to me for Christmas when I was eleven.  “Look well upon them.  Their meeting is fortunate and means some great good for the sad realm of Narnia.  Tarva the Lord of Victory salutes Alambil the Lady of Peace.  They are just coming into their nearest.”  (p.40)
The actual conjunction will happen on March 15.  The planets don’t touch, but they will be in the same degree of the Zodiac.

Depression

(Written in November 2004)
Woke feeling bleak.  Hard to get out of bed.  Dizzy at first.  Feeling very low in my heart.  Thinking that death would be a relief, it’s just too hard to live.  And yet there’s nothing particularly difficult right now except worry about Bella.  Nothing I ‘have to’ do.  But it’s just the most ordinary things: shopping, fixing meals, cleaning house that are the hardest to do when I feel this bleak and tired and sick.  Where is my courage?  It helps when I hear David Whyte say that life IS difficult.

Feeling very meaningless — why am I going on, cooking and eating?  It’s very bright outside, clear and sunny, snow sparkling.  I think I find it less painful to feel bleak when it’s bleak outside.  The brightness frightens me — seems to be calling me out into the cold, out to fresh air and adventure, when all I want to do is crawl into a cave and hide.
I did have an image which felt helpful somehow — of myself as a shaman swimming down into the depths of water beneath the ice.  So if one part of me is in this deep place I can’t expect to do much more than stay alive up here on the surface.

Although part of me is frantic that I’m not making myself: clean the floor, walk the dog, work on art, and is afraid that I’ll just go downhill, another part — the one that sees the shaman journeying under water — knows that this is something I’m moving through.  Another test, another threshold of something to be let go of, another incubation in darkness and silence — I haven’t a clue what new thing might be getting ready to birth — but I think lying low and treating myself as an invalid is the way to go.

Guidance

(Written in July 2004)
Dear Guides and Guardian Spirits, I’m feeling lost and a little scared about my recent inability to stay on top of the Neskaya administrative stuff.  Please help me!
Dear Jenny, breathe, relax, you’re doing fine.  This is a passage, and part of letting Neskaya go into other hands.  You know what to do.  It’s OK to ask for help.  More meditation, yoga, and walking outdoors during the day will help.  Taking care of yourself is first priority.  You are not here to do the administrative work of running Neskaya.  Nor are you here to keep the building clean.  You are a visionary and an artist and your job is to be caretaker of the special energy here at Neskaya, of celebrating diversity, of inclusivity, of co-creativity.  We support you in dropping the physical level part of the job and putting your effort and energy into the invisible energetic part of the job.  We love you.  Relax, dear, there is plenty of time to work this all out.

Dear Guides and Guardian Spirits, I’m feeling really discouraged about the state of the world.  Please help me.
Dear Jenny, it’s important to keep on keeping on.  You know this, and it has already strengthened your heart.  We remind you that what you are already doing is enough: maintaining this healing sanctuary, supporting the practice of celebrating diversity, making creativity and Spirit the center of your life.  Like the algae who helped re-balance the Living Machine, your doing what you do is an important part of the whole.  It is not the whole job, but you can’t do the whole job.  Doing your part is enough.  Taking care of yourself, supporting yourself, so you can keep doing your part, is where you need to be putting your energy.  Dear Jenny, we love you and we surround you with loving warmth.  You are doing just fine.

Five of Water

(Written in June 2004)
Day started badly.  Found bank deposit that I prepared before I left for Kripalu & forgot.   I feel out of control.  This scares me because it looks like a coping strategy that has served me all my life — being super-responsible — has collapsed and left me without form or structure.  It’s like walls that were holding me up and in have collapsed and I’ve melted and run all over the floor.
Kayla was talking at me with that harshness that I interpret as anger and I started a sentence in Giraffe “When you speak to me in that intense way,  I feel scared…  and I need….” and she got it: “You need me to soften my voice..” and that really helped.  She picked a Tarot card for me, the Five of Cups, also called “spilling”.  In Tarot of the Spirit it says:

“The Five of Water is the rise of antipathy just when it seemed everything was going well.  You anticipated that you would experience great pleasure at this stage, but there was an unexpected disturbance, and the expected pleasure has been usurped.  As such, you feel a sense of futility and regret.  You feel anger and despair.  Emotional chaos seems to have arisen from somehow not being seen.  You have felt as if you were lost, experiencing an onslaught of transience.  …  There may have been moments when you felt so confused that it seemed like you were controlled by internal destructive forces, forces which seemed too deep to understand.
“You may have found yourself shaking your head and repeating “I don’t know, I don’t know… “ You may have felt like you wanted to cry.  You tried to get someone’s attention.  You have spilled out in all directions.
“When you have spilled everything out, and are right down to the bottom of your cup, you will finally see your own heart reflected.  Then you will see that you based your desire on expectations that had no foundation in reality.  That was the problem.  But you will also see that your heart, at base, is pure and good.  It is full with love, a deep love that longs to flow in the right direction. …
“The challenge of the Five of Water is to establish a new vision of your own power.  It is time to reassess and adjust.  It is time to know and correct any falsities you have programmed into your life and re-establish your connection with the fundamental truth…
“Card symbology: ..  You see the purity of your own heart reflected.  This is the key to understanding that the outcome will be positive.  At the bottom of the cup … the last reservoir, and it is the eternal reservoir of Self-Love.  Here she finds true understanding, but for the moment, that understanding is cut off from relationship.
“ …  The road is a road of healing.  Then you emerge at the top of a lighted hill as in Matthew: “You are like light for the whole world” … In the same way your light must shine.”

“Giraffe” and “Jackal” are used in NonViolent Communication to distinguish compassionate from judgmental language.  Kayla and I had been part of a study group so even though my attempt was halting, she got the message.  Afterward, thinking about it, I realized that the “harshness” that I was interpreting as anger was in fact concern for me.

The synchronicity of the reading for the Five of Water blew me away.  This was a direct message from Spirit.  “Emotional chaos seems to have arisen from somehow not being seen” reflects my being triggered by Paula’s message which resembled things my mother said, that had nothing to do with me at all.  In some ways my deepest wound was not being seen and mirrored accurately, so I still have an incorrect knowledge of my weaknesses and strengths.  “There may have been moments when you felt so confused that it seemed like you were controlled by internal destructive forces, forces which seemed too deep to understand,” describes PTSD very well.  The reassurance that my heart is pure and longs to love, and the need for Self-love, are issues that I have been struggling with for a long time.

Having a Hard Time

(Written in June 2004)
A really bad night.  Dogs barking, didn’t call cops.  My heart just ached.  I tried to bring compassion to it without success.  It’s slap in my face how little control I have.  I can’t even stop my own dog from barking, nor can I make her drink – a worry pain in my heart.  I feel isolated and disconnected, far from spirit and from human contact.

Feeling pretty wretched.  Not wanting to live — this is just too hard.  My heart aches and feels stony at the same time.  I think “There’s no reason to go on” then I remember Bella and Lynelle.  They would be very unhappy if I died.  Probably this is something that I’m going through…
Thinking about the trouble with Paula, I see that I’m not satisfied by calling the police.  What I need is for someone to hear what a hard time I’m having. To care enough to help me, and to take action to protect me.  I see that Paula’s diatribe was just like Mom: invalidating my pain, telling me it’s not OK to ask to have my needs met if it’s inconvenient for her, making me wrong for having a hard time with her actions — or inactions, or failure to take responsibility — that hurt me.

Heart heavy — all of me feels heavy, dragged down, weak, without substance or energy.  Feeling slightly sick to my stomach.  Now the scared hopeless feeling comes in, a sort of vibration at the corners of my jaw.  And now the cold down the front of my body, I was feeling that last night and now heat, so I feel hot AND cold and sick and weak.

I hear the planes and remind myself that I suffered from that noise for 14 years, and now it doesn’t bother me.

Paula was my neighbor in 2004.  She let her dog run all the time, and it would bark at all hours.  Sometimes when it was barking at 3AM, I would call, and have trouble waking her up.  She would say nice things, and call the dog in, but then it would happen again, and again, and again.  Finally she got so tired of me calling, that she called my number and left a long message about how she had lived here for 18 years and nobody ever complained  (nobody lived next door to her until we built Neskaya) and I must have a thing about dogs, and how awful I was…   I deleted the message. But it knocked me into a very painful space.  I did call the cops at one time – the man I talked to was very helpful – there is in fact a leash law and a noise ordinance, both of which I could have made use of.  But I never did.  I couldn’t believe that it was OK to protect myself that way, and I couldn’t call the Police while I was so upset.  It’s also true that I had terrible insomnia, related to PTSD (I sleep well now, thanks to medication) and that I was extremely sensitive to noises, also a symptom of PTSD.

Dalai Lama on Optimism

Came across this quote today.  One worth memorizing.

In the face of all the challenges we face today, is my optimism about the future of humanity idealistic? Perhaps it is. Is it unrealistic? Certainly not. To remain indifferent to the challenges we face is indefensible. If the goal is noble, whether or not it is realized within our lifetime is largely irrelevant. What we must do therefore is to strive and persevere and never give up.

The Will of God

I’m SO TIRED. and feeling very empty — of meaning, of reason to go on.  Lynelle brought me the Cynthia Bourgeault CD’s on the “Wisdom Jesus.”  I remember listening to them driving down to Kripalu and back.  I really liked her.  Lynelle recommended CD #6 which was “practices”, and the specific practice on Track 7.  So I listened to it.  She talks about being “available to god on a very deep level.”  I was surprised to feel resistance.  I had just been talking to god while walking the dog, saying that if they really wanted me to do the Sacred Sites program and the Sacred Calendar, then they had to give me some help.  So I think, as I continue to struggle with roadblocks, that “god” has turned back into the judgmental, punitive god based on my alcoholic parents who made me wrong for needing help, gave me no support at all, told me “Why did you try if you didn’t know how to do it?”

Sitting here puzzling about all this, I ask myself what do I really want?  Do I want to do the Will of God?  Do I want to be available to God on the deep level?  Do I want to do the Sacred Sites program if it’s not God’s will?  If God wanted me not to do it would I drop it?  I think the difficulty I’m having is that god has reverted to alcoholic parents.  I’ve lost the welcoming god at the gate of heaven, and the Red Woman’s presence who loves everything I do.  She was with me briefly on the walk, but I couldn’t sustain her presence, it’s just something I’m making up, isn’t it?

So then I ask — how do I understand the “will of god”?  I think of the huge love that is presently creating the Universe.  I think of Spirit, who clearly sent me on the trip on the Argonaut around the “Island World of Britain” where I saw Callanish for the first time.  Spirit, who cleverly arranged for me to meet John Garber, thus starting the chain of events that led to Knocknarae and Stonehenge.  But that’s thinking.  What I feel are the roadblocks, the lack of energy or enthusiasm for the project.  It feels like “surrendering to the will of god” means relaxing and stopping trying so hard.  It reminds me of the time when I wrenched myself away from the desire for a particular shell, and what happened was an abundance of shells.   How do I wrench myself away from this project?

So I got up and started the prunes.  Normally I do my stretches while they’re cooking, but I’m wondering whether or not to push myself.  I’ve been thinking maybe it’s the constant effort, effort, effort that tires me out.  I also wondered this morning if it had to do with not seeing enough people?  I remember Lynelle telling me that babies get lethargic if they don’t get enough attention.

It occurred to me that I could use Martha Beck’s “shackles on” and “shackles off” to help me negotiate this day.  No shackles, so I built a fire.  But I am feeling “shackles on” about doing roll & pour, fire breath, balance box.  At least my ribs are better today, I could put logs in the stove with my right arm.

Lynelle referred me to Cynthia’s quote from a Sufi master, Kabir Helminski: “The person who makes all cares into one care, the care for simply staying present, will be cared for by that presence which is creative love.”  I found that very helpful.  No matter how tired and discouraged I am, I can always be present to tiredness and discouragement.

A Time Out

I desperately need a time-out from my life.  I wish I knew how to get one.  I read the Secret Life of Bees again recently, and found some paragraphs that were comforting.

“I started thinking about the world loaded with disguised Marys sitting all over the place and hidden red hearts tucked about that people could rub and touch, only we didn’t recognize them.”    p142
“The first week at August’s was a consolation, a pure relief.  The world will give you that once in a while, a brief time-out; the boxing bell rings and you go to your corner, where somebody else dabs mercy on your beat-up life.”    p82

Using Depression in Service to Spiritual Practice

I wrote in the post on Depression and the Dark Night that I had used my depression in the service of my spiritual practice.  I want to think what I meant by that.  At least in the beginning, Depression was in charge.  Depression forced me to find a spiritual practice.  It also stopped me from moving forward in any conventional career or life-style.  And it forced me to continually ask “What purpose is there for my life?”  I suppose that in refusing to blame someone else for my misery, or take it out on someone else like my parents did, I was already making a spiritual choice.  That’s probably important, the many times I made the choice for kindness or compassion, or even silence, instead of cruelty or anger.  I couldn’t say I really started to “use” my depression until I began to work with Somatic Experiencing.  I would have to say S.E. is a spiritual practice in itself.  I’ve described it to other people as “vipassana meditation with an intense focus on sensations in the body.”  Having this new way to look at depression meant staying with it, staying in the present, and observing myself as objectively as possible.  This often brought me to a place of having more compassion for myself.  Also understanding that my depression was the result of having been traumatized, and not a personal defect or a choice, helped me to release a lot of my self-hate and anger toward myself.

I’m feeling pretty depressed right now.  I tell myself: this is because you weren’t happy with your talk on astronomy at Breitzfelder Park, because you are tired from doing “Sacred Sites” at Beverly’s, because you waited an hour on the highway and never got to see Caryn.  These are good reasons to be depressed.  Some compassion for Jenny who’s having such a hard time.  I’m also feeling sick — a little queasy of stomach, a little bloated & clogged in my intestines.  I did do some abdominal massage and I have an appointment with Kellie in two weeks.

Another thing I’ve learned from depression is how to surrender, how to give in and trust the process.  I have mantras that help me: “I offer myself to this process,” and “Thy will be done.”  The first one I learned at Kripalu and found very helpful.  It’s similar to AA’s First Step which is “Accept that I am powerless over __________  (in my case depression).”  I’ve actually worked through the 12 steps with a therapist.  One thing that was comforting about AA was not having to believe in God.  At that point in my life, god was judgemental and punitive, “Capricious, Malicious and Willful.”  So it was a long time before I could say “Thy will be done.”  I couldn’t do that until I had learned from experience that there IS an unconscious process that carries me to healing, integration and growth.
There is a big difference between “surrender” and “giving up.”  Initially, I was so afraid of giving up that I would go on trying long after I should have quit.  The few times I did actually surrender I thought it was giving up.  At this point I understand “giving up” to mean dropping the project and turning to distraction.  This is different from “taking a break” knowing that you will return to the project refreshed.  For me “surrender” means letting go of the effort, but staying with the project, the depression, the pain in the heart, not trying to change it.  Sometimes I use the words “completely accept.”  They help me relax and let it be.
