Woman in Her Third Blooming

I wrote this in December 2005:  I’m feeling very angry and resentful that I’ve worked so hard for so long and don’t have any rewards.  Well, there are some rewards, they’re just few and far between.  I’m angry that I’ve built a good life for myself and am not able to enjoy it.  I’m resentful that other people are out there having fun and I’m not able to.  I also remember reading down the list of “Choices made by extremely happy people” and realizing I’ve made all of them.  (They mostly had to do with taking responsibility for one’s life.) So why am I not happy?  I “should” be happy, I’ve done many things “right”.  So either I’m, at some level, choosing not to be happy for some perverse reason of my own, or I’m up against brain chemistry which I have no control over, or I’m struggling with some major physical disability that hasn’t been identified.  Not having energy really leaves me vulnerable to depression.

In February 2006 I went to see Dr. Vreeland in Norwich, Vermont. He’s been able to help a lot of people who hadn’t been helped by the standard medical practice.  He does live blood cell analysis which I really like because you can see exactly what’s happening in your body.  I took him some blood tests I’d had done the year before, trying to find out what was causing my low level of energy.  He looked at the tests, looked at me, and said “I think you’re dealing with low thyroid.  Has your temperature always been low?”  My jaw dropped to the floor.  Yes, my temperature has been 96.8° for as long as I can remember, and no doctor has ever commented on it.  He had me take my armpit temperature in the morning before I started moving.  Some days it was as low as 94°.  He also suggested I read a book “Hypothyroidism: the Unsuspected Illness“, which was published back in the 60s.  The author, Broda Barnes, talks about all the illnesses that can be caused by low thyroid.  The symptoms mimic those of depression.  Before I started taking Imipramine, they tested the level of thyroid hormone in my blood.  It was low but within the “normal” range.  But Barnes says the symptom that really counts is low temperature.
Dr. Vreeland says of the low thyroid condition that when my blood sugar is low the adrenals kick in and then some complex thing happens which he called “hormonal pingpong” — that explains the wierdness of my symptoms.  He did the live blood cell study — there were my red corpuscles, mostly round with strong cell walls, a few white cells, one “killer cell” which looked a little dragonish.  He said my blood looked good, that I had done a great job with diet — that made me feel great!  So I have hope — more hope than I’ve had for a long time.

Dream: people are coming into the room as tho to a party/celebration.  Then I’m talking to a woman in a green dress who is a friend, not particularly close tho.  I tell her about the thyroid condition.  She says she always secretly thought that I was lazy.  She wants me to tell the whole group, she says “We’ll make room for your performance this evening.”  Then she calls out to the whole group: “Here’s a woman in her third blooming.” They all clap and cheer.  Then we go out a door to a garden space where some people are playing musical instruments.  To our right doors are open into a room where people are dancing.  On our left is a man playing a fiddle.  The woman in green introduces him — he’s tall, dark, dressed in dark clothes, with a craggy face, gypsyish — he takes me by the arm and walks me into the room, saying “I’ll see you properly ballroomed.” We join the other couples who are lining up as though to do a contra dance.
Goodness!  “Third blooming.” I like the idea.

It’s so amazing.  My energy is much better since Dr. Vreeland told me what’s going on — and also his confidence that he can fix it.  Relief and hope together have made a huge difference in how I feel.

I notice now that I actually felt better just knowing about the condition, before I even started taking the supplements. This is the effect of morale that Byron Brown talks about.

Struggle to Love Myself

On May 14, I posted a writing about my struggle to love myself.  It was written in June 2004:
I need space and time and permission — more than permission, I need to know beyond a shadow of a doubt that this is the right thing to do, the divinely commanded thing to do, what’s in alignment with Universal Purpose —   It’s amazing how deeply I feel inside myself that it’s morally wrong for me to pay that much attention to myself.

I addressed the issue again in December 2005
I’ve been trying to imagine what would make me feel better about having no energy, and having to spend so much effort just in taking care of myself.  I imagined the Bodhisattva, Kuan Yin herself, walking in the door and sitting on the couch next to me, and speaking the words I need to hear:
“My dear child, you have been working so hard.  You are exhausted and drained from your effort not to be dragged down by the huge weight of depression.  You have done well — magnificently! — and your efforts have been of help to all who struggle in darkness.  The only part of the work that you have not been able to do is to take better care of this cherished child, who has worked so hard for the benefit of all.  It is time now to relax your efforts on behalf of others.  You have set things in motion, like Neskaya and Journey into Courage, that continue to do good in the world without your making further effort.  Now you must take care of Jenny as best you can.  Know that we love you and support you in doing this.  Know that your effort to be kind and compassionate to Jenny, to nurture her and allow her to rest, is not different from your work on behalf of all sentient beings.  Let your tired, wounded heart rest in the Ocean of Compassion.”

I went to a retreat with Jack Kornfield, in January 2007:  he did a guided meditation on going to a very painful event in your life and imagine how it would have been different if a spiritual being had come and changed places with you so you could see how they would handle the situation.
I went to my most painful place: I went to myself in the yurt wanting to die after reading the letter from R.  The being who came to the door was Kuan Yin, and I didn’t feel any different when she inhabited my body, but when I wasn’t paying attention she started building a wall.  The gift she gave me was a sword and shield and she said: “Never be afraid to stand up for yourself, never be afraid to protect yourself.”
I was astounded.  The Bodhisattva of COMPASSION giving me a WEAPON?

Not until I read Byron Brown on defending your soul against the Judge did I understand.  It makes me think of the poem by Gerard Manley Hopkins that ends “what I do is me for this I came.”

Awakening Kali

Ingrid Bacci wrote a book called The Art of Effortless Living.  I liked it, so in March of 2008 I went to her workshop at Kripalu. I signed up for a private session, and it was pretty amazing.  Here are my journal entries:

Energized.  Invigorated.  Every cell blazing with energy.  My feminist anger has been reawakened!  I did a session with Ingrid yesterday afternoon.  She’s a medical intuitive and does bodywork.  She said the tiredness was not organic, that my father was still holding me down.  When she said “Where do you feel your father in your body?” I writhed with disgust.  He’s in my upper chest, a slimy sleazy energy.  I raged and roared — sabotaged by coughing.  But I did the work.  After the session it seemed like the sleazy energy was on the surface, not under my skin, and I imagined peeling it off like duct tape.

Yes, I can feel the anger blazing through me, and it’s not up in my head, it’s in my chest and upper arms.  Kali Durga Namo Nama!

What’s really amazing is how the energy is blazing from my chest and shoulders and upper arms, calm and strong in my legs, cool in my head.

I want to work on a new version of my autobiography “How I came to find god in myself, and learned to love her fiercely.” Oh!  I can use my idea of a circular book, and Lore’s of a book of goddesses. How about Insect-mother as goddess of Dead Death and Kali Durga as Goddess of Death & Rebirth and Mama Greene as Goddess of Nourishment.  Karen!  Laura Shannon!  Deena Metzger!   Lore, Kayla, Beverly, Lynelle.  Joanna Macy.  Elizabet Sahtouris.  Vandana Shiva.  O my O my!!   How about Bella and Shenanigan.  Artemis Huntress as Goddess of the Moon.  And there’s the excitement again.  But in my chest, not my head.

Also, when my energy gets really quenched: 1) lie on the ground, completely give weight to Mother Earth as I did in my dance, relax, surrender completely for as long as is needed.  2) Throw off the Oppressive Father God, peel his slime off your body, it is not part of you, it is stuck on the outside.  They tore the Bastille stone from stone.  I too can throw off oppression and dance for joy.

O yes — Dionysius.  He belongs in my book of Goddesses.

Soul without Shame

I’ve been reading Soul without Shame; a Guide to Liberating Yourself from the Judge Within, and finding it very helpful.  It’s validating of the work I’ve been doing, and even explains some things, like my experience of Kali in the work with Ingrid Bacci.  Byron Brown talks about the pain of the self-betrayal involved in either complying with the parents’ wishes, or justifying, trying to prove your case, trying to get them to believe it.  That just keeps you in the ‘judgment loop.’ I realize when I began to speak my truth to my internalized parents, instead of trying to convince them, I got much stronger.

When you find yourself in the judgment loop, it is good to be indignant.  “This is not unlike what naturally arises in a child who has been tricked or treated disrespectfully. …  It is time to stand up and speak for yourself and the truth of your experience.  It is time to activate your essential strength.”    p 219

“The energy for active defending is available to you the moment you recognize that your deepest nature is being constricted by the experience of being attacked. …  The sense of outrage awakens your essential strength and with it the capacity and clarity to defend your own truth in the face of judgment.  Ultimately, this truth is nothing but the integrity and aliveness of the human soul.” p 219

“Essential strength is felt as red vibrant heat rising up from your belly to destroy the falsehood, the injustice, the repressive activity of the judge, whether it is coming from another person or from inside you.  This movement is based in compassion — a felt understanding of the hurt and limitation being suffered — and thus supports a true disengagement that will serve the humanity of all concerned.  It will not wreak vengeance or act out of blind rage.  This essential quality may begin as anger at the debilitating effect of self-judgment, but it emerges as an assertive strength to be yourself without the need for acceptance, approval, or acknowledgement of anyone else.  Most fundamentally, it is the strength to be yourself without a self-image but with a sense of presence that is grounded, clear, and vitally alive.
“True strength is the basic instinctual energy of survival and self-protection, which we recognized as missing or blocked in the judgment process in Chapter 4.  Now it is operating on a level that incorporates intelligence, awareness, and understanding of your true nature and what needs to be defended.  Strength is the essential aspect that the judge is most effective at blocking — the part of your essence that was especially undermined by the judgments of powerful adults.  You as a child did not have the physical presence and capacity to embody this instinctual energy for your own protection.  Even if you could have, it was dangerous to do so because you were still very dependent on adults for survival.  That is no longer the case.  Now you can begin a vital aspect of your journey: recovering that compassionate, intelligent vitality — the strength essence.”   p 220

“The judge’s activity is aimed at blocking contact with the freedom and expansiveness of the living soul.  So each form [of defending yourself] points to a way of tapping into the dynamism and aliveness of who you are now, unconnected to your history.”   p 245

“You must step out of the judgment loop.  This is the real soul work. …  This is when you assert your fundamental aliveness and freedom.  This is when you align yourself with the deep longing to be real and present in your life against the self-defeating experience of judgment.”   p 291

The Ongoing Disaster

(Written in July 2005)
Dear Guides and Guardian Spirits, I’m feeling hugely sad.  I think it’s because our country, with its founding vision of democracy, has gotten so badly off track, creating a culture of money and power that is destroying so much that is of value on our beautiful planet.
Dear Jenny, stay with the sadness.  It is legitimate, it is profoundly right to be sad when seeing something, which had great promise and tremendous resources, go so badly astray.  You are also sad because you feel like your ability to make a difference is pitifully tiny compared to the enormity of this ongoing disaster.  You feel like you are fighting a losing battle for which you are badly equipped.  The losses and wounds of your childhood sap the energy you need to take courageous action in the face of overwhelming difficulties, and you feel like you are slipping backwards in your efforts for healing both yourself and the planet.  Dear Jenny, every day you take courageous action in the face of overwhelming difficulties.  Just getting through the day takes courage.  Getting out of bed takes courage, making art, writing in your journal, all are courageous actions in the face of overwhelming difficulties.  As is teaching Sacred Circle Dance.  Your only failure is to acknowledge the greatness of what you are already doing.  Give yourself some credit for your actual accomplishments.  Dear One, just by holding your vision of Planet Earth, by appreciating the trees you see from your window, by not giving in to brain chemistry and trauma symptoms, you are doing good work for the planet you love.  Yes, even staying with the sadness makes a difference.  Know that you are very much loved.

Salvation in Diversity

(Written in February 2008)

Somebody sent a link to a YouTube video of Paul Hawken’s talk at the bioneers conference.  He’s talking about the “biggest movement in the world and how no one saw it coming.” “It is non-violent, grassroots, it has no central ideology, a male vertebrate is not in charge…  No one started it, no one is in charge of it, there is no orthodoxy. It is classless, global, unquenchable, tireless…    Shared understanding arising spontaneously.  There is no center, no one spokesperson.  This is where salvation will be found …  in diversity.   This movement is humanity’s immune response to resist and heal political disease, economic infection, ecological corruption, caused by ideologies.”

Spent a lot of time on YouTube — watched the Paul Hawken video 4 times.  I’m realizing that Paul Hawken’s description of the movement that’s “under the radar, grassroots, no one is in charge, there is no orthodoxy” would be terrifying to your standard control freak.  My father would have been horrified — and I’m sure all those other white males who are desperate to control “them”, the “great unwashed”, “hoi polloi”, the dark, indigenous, out of control masses.  But we are tireless and unquenchable, and we will win.  Salvation is to be found in diversity.  True for ecosystems, agriculture, and investment portfolios.  True for democracies who want to be truly democratic.

Dealing with Rejection

(Written in October 2005)
This morning I woke up with an ache in my heart and realized I was angry with myself for not being beautiful.  Then my heart went out to me, and that helped a lot.

DAMMIT! Somewhere, at some time on the planet there must have been men who would appreciate me — who would appreciate my intelligence and my passion, and my woundedness, and how hard I’ve worked to heal from those wounds.  Surely there’s a woman worth loving in there, one with value above a pretty face. and my anger and my pain and my ability to be present for someone else’s pain.  Surely that’s worth something?

Somatic Experiencing with Brad helped a lot.  I wasn’t sure if I was even going to talk about the man who rejected me but it came up, with a lot of tears.  At one point I became aware that my body — arms, thighs and butt — was making a container for the pain in my heart.  That was comforting somehow.  Then the image of the battlefield that appeared during “Red Rain” appeared again.  Blackened earth, bombed out buildings, destroyed vehicles, corpses, a few lost people wandering around.  Black sky overhead with a gleam of light near the horizon.  Reminds me of the “bombed out village” I found in the work with Debbie.  Brad asks if I can imagine someone there with me.  I first imagine Mama Greene — but it doesn’t work, she doesn’t belong here, I can’t make her appear.  I sit alone with it for a bit and then suddenly remember Joanna Macy who is immediately there next to me.  I tell Brad about the workshop, learning not to be afraid of despair, knowing that I would not change how I’m living even if I knew there was no hope, because I can’t live any other way.  Brad says “Because it’s coming from inside you.  That’s true beauty.” I had said earlier how much it hurt that I wasn’t beautiful, and a little about being angry at myself for not being more attractive.  Now I realize that my life was wrecked before it even got started, part of the devastation Western Culture has inflicted on our planet and all of our psyches.    That burned-out landscape is the collective psyche of Western Culture, the flip side of the slick advertising and the neon lights.  I realize that I’m not alone in my pain, that I’m not alone because I’m unattractive and worthless, I’m alone because this is a bad time to be a woman looking for a male partner among the shell-shocked victims of the ongoing world war.  That helps a lot.  I tell Brad about the last line of the poem: “How dare I be discouraged in this work by anything so trivial as fear of personal failure?” I realize that the whole issue about whether I’m attractive or not diminishes into the category of “trivial”.  It’s much easier to imagine that there are men out there who would appreciate me, it’s just that my chances of meeting one are minimal.

Caring for my Life

(Written in November 2005)
Seasons of Grace quotes Frodo: “I wish the Ring had never come to me… I wish none of this had happened.” Gandalf replies “So do all who live to see such times, but that is not for them to decide.  All we have to decide is what to do with the time that is given us.” This helps me separate myself from my life, see it not as me — wounded and defective and suffering — but as something given to me to care for.  As though I had been given a poisoned field or a clear cut forest to care for.  I would not feel angry and bitter, I would love the field or the forest for what it had once been, and might still be again even if I never saw it.  And I would pray for the ravaged land, and tend it, dig up what garbage I could, purify what toxins I could, shelter what seedlings I could, bring what clean water I could, and not waste time and heart energy being angry at the ones who trashed it, or that I would never see it in its full glory.

Guidance for Discouragement

(Written in May 2005)
Dear Guides and Guardian Spirits, I’m deeply discouraged about what we humans are doing to the planet, and it feels almost impossible to go ahead and do what I need to do to take care of myself today.  Please help me.
Dear Jenny, we love you a lot.  Ranks upon ranks of buddhas and bodhisattvas love you, there is enormous love from the universe surrounding and flowing through you and your planet.  Let yourself just relax and take in this love.  There is no need to do anything, no need at all.  The love is there even when you are tired and discouraged.  Let your compassion go out to all the people who are tired and discouraged today, especially those who have things they really care about that they are unable to do anything about.  You are not the only one to feel too tired to clean your house or feed yourself, how could you possibly take action to help the planet that you love?  Dear, like the algae that re-balanced the living machine, your doing what you do will help in ways you don’t know about.  Keep on: taking care of yourself, letting yourself rest, and teaching the dances.  This is your piece of the huge task.

Guidance

(Written in October 2004)
Dear Guides and Guardian Spirits, I’m feeling a little lonely and sad.  Please remind me of what is really important.

Dear Jenny, relax.  Let yourself sink down into the couch, into the Ocean of Compassion.  What’s really important is to live from a place of love, of kindness and gentleness.  Remember the beings that you love: Bella, Lynelle, Beverly, Kayla, Julia, Barbara, Greg, Gene, etc.  And all that is worthy of love in your life: this house, Neskaya, the dances and music, the mountains and trees and streams, the spirits, all the people who are working for peace and sustainability.  Remember the vision of a world where everyone has enough to eat, has clothing and shelter and the means to keep warm in the winter, where everyone belongs to a loving community, and has the opportunity to use their gifts for the good of that community.  Where ‘war has been renounced and its instruments disassembled’, and the money that used to be spent on weapons is used for schools and hospitals, or just given back to communities and individuals to improve the quality of their daily lives.  This is the direction that the whole world is moving, though there is much resistance from people who have been traumatized and oppressed and filled with fear.  Remember that the team that is fighting to save planet earth includes more than the people who are working for peace, justice and environmental sanity.  The team includes the animals, trees and rocks, the fish in the sea — even the algae are fighting to save planet earth — and all the spirits, saints, Buddhas and Bodhisattvas.  How can we fail to save the earth?  All shall be well and all shall be well, and all manner of thing shall be well.
