Sadness & Guidance

I haven’t posted in a while because I’ve been really struggling with depression.  This was written in July 2010:
Well, I really am feeling sad.  It may be partly that nobody’s here.  I enjoyed waking up at my brother’s house and doing my tea & journal while able to hear others’ conversations.  Caryn will be back tomorrow, thank god.  I’ve noticed that I’m no longer sitting up straight in the car.  I’ve gone back to the slumped posture.  When I notice and straighten up it feels better, but I don’t stay that way.  And when I wake up I feel uncomfortable in my body.
Well, what am I feeling in my body? A heaviness, a weight, my heart feels heavy.  Wanting to curl up, hang my head.  Tears behind my eyes.  What does it want?  To be held and comforted, told everything’s going to be all right.  sigh.  I think that’s all I ever wanted so many times in my life.  Certainly in my childhood, where it wasn’t available.  Can I give it to myself?  Not really, because right now I don’t have it inside myself.  How does a mother reassure her baby when the bombs are falling?  Maybe the baby calls out a protective instinct, maybe she can say “Mommy’s here” with a solid comforting voice.  I remember how I used to run to my ex-husband, asking for reassurance.

Dear Guides & Guardian Spirits, I’m feeling so sad.  Can you help me?
Dear Jenny, we love you.  Lots of people love you and would comfort you if they knew you were sad.  The root of this sadness is old and deep, going back to an infancy pretty much devoid of tenderness and comfort.  Your mother couldn’t comfort you, she expected you to comfort her.  How could you feel solidly held, or that your weight rested on a firm floor?  This is why it’s so hard to soothe yourself when you’re feeling sad.  There, there, dear.  We are with you, we are making a circle around you.  Remember Jalaja saying “You are never, ever, alone.” It would be OK to curl up with the Napier tape and a doll.  We love you.

Guidance

(Written in January 2008)
Dear Guides and Guardian Spirits, I’m feeling sad and discouraged: about the losses of my life, about the state of the world, about my lack of energy that keeps me from taking action to support the things I care about.  Please help me.
Dear Jenny, relax.  We love you.  Yes there is much suffering in the world, and yes, people need to take action.  But there is a time for action, and a time for rest.  You are badly depleted from a long hard struggle, a struggle that has taken your whole life.  You have fought for healing, for truth, for peace and justice and sustainability.  You have done your best to live a life that supports your deepest values.  You do not need to do more than you are already doing.  And right now, you need to find a way to rest and renew, to nurture yourself.  You have lived a life as darkened by war and oppression as any life in the war-torn areas of the planet.  You have fought hard, and received too little validation for your courage and strength, and your achievements in overcoming the wounds and oppressive conditioning of your childhood.  We suggest that you gather good stories about your struggle, like the ones you shared with Kevin, and the “tough little drip that just wouldn’t quit.” Relax.  Feast on your life.  It is OK to rest and take care of yourself.  Others, many others, seen and unseen, are carrying on the fight for peace, justice and sustainability.  You are not alone.

Guidance

(Written in December 2005)
Dear Guides and Guardian Spirits, I’m really feeling as bad as I’ve ever felt about myself and my life.  Please help me.
Dear Jenny, this is clinical depression.  It’s not who you really are.  Hang on. You’ve raised the medication and it will work, it just takes time.  The person you really are is the one you were last fall when you felt good about yourself and your life, you had enthusiasm for daily living and you enjoyed it.  This is possible again.  Remember how your friend Rose Marie flew from New York and rented a car to come do healing work with you — she thought you were worth that much effort.  And your friend Kathi who came and sat with you in the hospital because she needed your presence in her life.  There are many people who love you, you just can’t take it in right now.  Don’t make yourself wrong for this.  Just keep on going: doing the daily chores, getting out with the dog on snowshoes, dancing when you can.  You WILL come out of this.

Observation without evaluation.  Here’s this woman, born with a highly sensitive nervous system and traumatized in infancy.  There is also, probably, an inherited predisposition to depression.  The combination of high sensitivity and trauma means that her internal state is variable, vulnerable, volatile.  She is easily thrown off balance by small happenings, she can be triggered into extreme anxiety or profound depression by relatively normal events (people getting upset, something breaking, people leaving, dog being sick). She is not robust and stable but knocked about by every little wind that blows.  Every day is a struggle to just keep going, managing food and other chores, keeping up her commitments.

Three Things

I was talking to Elizabeth today. She told me that she had been listening to an old Angeles Arrien tape and she said something about the blessing way and 3 things you had to do every day.  I googled & found it:

I love what indigenous peoples say.  If you want the blessing-way to come into your family life or into organizations or communities or into the earth, there are three things that you must do every day: one is to set a sacred intention, two is to give gratitude, and three is to take a life affirming action every day.  So those are all positive doorways of how to work, especially setting sacred intention or life affirming action – is taking action on the intention.  And then gratitude, just the practice of gratitude, keeps the heart open and wherever the heart is open in the human species there is more generosity and more capacity for giving and receiving love and expressing love.

Guidance

Dear Guides and Guardian Spirits, I’m feeling baffled and frustrated.  I need to feel connected to a sense of my life’s meaning and its larger context.  Please help me.
Dear Jenny, we love you.  Can you feel our love surrounding you?  We are delighted that you are beginning to show the outrageous and exuberant side of yourself, that you are able to feel good about being that way instead of the old shame and fear.  This is the artist who builds play spaces and invites others to join her in having fun while connecting with important parts of living like community and nature and the natural cycles.  You make possible a very powerful and needed experience for people in this period of history.  In this light, practical difficulties are marginal and trivial.  They won’t stop you from doing your work.  Nourish yourself by dancing, gardening, do more mandalas with the watercolor crayons.  We love you!
Thank you.

My Life

(Written in January 2007)
I’ve spent my life struggling with the wounds of childhood and trying to heal.  I used to think that someday I’d be better and I’d get to have a real life.  But I’m beginning to see that that isn’t going to happen.  I have some good times, but I also get periodically disabled by despair and terror.  Most of the time it takes all my energy to get through the day with some dignity and grace.  My question is does a life like this benefit anyone other than myself and a few close friends?  I’ve never had a full-time job, I was married for a while and am now divorced.  I have no children.  I’m very concerned about what’s happening to the environment and wish I had energy and time to devote to activism.  Some days I can write or call my congresspeople, some days I can’t even pick up the phone.
O yes, but I was part of Journey into Courage, and my story eventually encouraged all the other women to realize that their abuse started in childhood.  And the video is still being used to train police and medical people, and help reform batterers.

Guidance

(Written in December 2006)
Dear Guides and Guardian Spirits.  I’m feeling completely discouraged and without hope.  I’m too tired to keep fighting.  Please help me.
Dear Jenny, we are all gathered around you loving you.  Your friends love you too.  Many people love you and would be very distressed if you died.  It’s OK for you to stop “trying”, it’s OK to stop “fighting”.  This is a passage, you will get through it.  All you need to do is keep practicing being in the present, and keep practicing loving kindness.  The most important thing is having compassion for yourself.  You have a right to be angry that you have worked so hard for so little reward.  It’s not that there is anything deficient about how hard you have worked.  It’s the nature of the job, that the rewards appear small.  Healing trauma takes a long time and has to be done in manageable bits.  Because you are one of the first to be doing this work, you are changing an energy pattern for your whole species, not just for yourself.  This is why the rewards seem so small, it’s like you were dragging 1000 people with you at every step.  This does not mean that you need to keep “fighting.” Just practice being present as best you can.  Taking time off by reading escapist books is OK.  We love you, and we honor you for all your hard work.

Angry Five-Year-Old

(Written in December 2006)
Karen helped me shift from conflict about “being open to a lover” to paying attention to the part of myself that I would rather let be dead.  What I saw was a just raped 5 year old, bleeding from her vagina, and I didn’t want to go near her.  Karen said all she needed was for me to let her know I cared about her, she didn’t need me to do anything — I was caught in that conflict.  Karen suggested I send helping spirits, and finally it occurred to me to put her in the center of the circle of women.  Then it felt like she was safe enough and boundaried enough so that I could pay attention to her and I felt her pain and anger and shame.  Then I asked Karen to let me curl up under the blanket & have her stroke my hair.  She also reminded me that that energy is more than sexuality — it’s my passion.  My passion for art, for dance, for justice, for peace, for the polar bears…  and I do have plenty of that.  So tho I’m afraid that part of me is “hurt too badly to live” — it’s not true.  I think about the little girls in the brothels in India whose spirits are broken by being raped repeatedly.  That little 5-year-old is cowed, humiliated, wounded, but not broken.  Her spirit keeps flashing out in my life.  And I will shelter that flame, and honor it, and let it live in my life whenever it can.

Tried talking to the 5-year-old — she’s sullen & angry and doesn’t want to have anything to do with me.  At one point I said I almost wish she hadn’t appeared in my life.  That got her attention and respect — at least she can count on me to be honest.  I told her I felt her feelings: her despair, her loneliness.  So now we have a dialogue.
It’s true that I didn’t want her, didn’t want to have to pay attention to her pain, didn’t want to have to deal with another layer of pain and abuse and trauma.  What I wanted was to begin living my life.  But I also have a commitment to the truth, and she belongs to me, she’s part of my work.
She’s angry at me because I was the good one, I “sucked up” to Mom & Dad and kept trying to get people to like me.  She wanted to be “bad”, she wanted to explore and experiment and make messes and be sexual — and I wouldn’t let her because I was afraid.  afraid no one would ever love me.  She says “What good’s love?  It never did you any good.”

Dear Guides and Guardian Spirits, I’m having a hard time with this new hurt & angry part of me that’s recently appeared.
Dear Jenny, you are doing fine.  You are doing your best to be compassionate to your aching body.  Remember that the intent is what counts, not feelings of compassion.  Of course you like it better when the feelings come too, but your compassion is already there in your intention of kindness.  About this new part of you, you are doing well here too.  With your honesty and willingness, you have established a relationship.  Your job now is not to make her feel better or find out more about her — it’s to be open and available, and to be mindful of her feelings and needs.  Allowing her to express herself through your art is the best thing you can do for both of you.  We know this is hard — remember to ask for our help.

What not to say to us

(I wrote this in 1990, for a friend of mine struggling with PTSD.  At the time I knew I was having a somewhat similar struggle with depression, but I had no idea I was dealing with PTSD too.)

What not to say to us

“Wallowing in your misery”
I don’t wallow in my misery, it swallows me.
“Wallow” implies I have a choice, that I could get up out of the mud and walk away.

But the mud is in me, clinging
it moves sluggishly through my veins
it clogs my thoughts
it dissolves my vision in greyness
it fills my muscles with tension and pain.

I am my misery
I wish I could get up and walk away from myself.

“Why don’t you get a job?”
I have a job.
I’m dragging a huge invisible burden
hauling ghosts and voices that drag me back,
“oughts” and “shoulds” that weigh a ton.
Before I can feed myself I must fight my way
past an invisible barrier that says
“you aren’t worth it.”
In order to pick up my mail, I cross an invisible minefield of
people who ignore me or
glare at me or
(worst of all) ask me how I am.
I spend all day working at not killing myself.
It’s a full time job.

“Why can’t you forget it?”
When your arm is torn off in an accident, do you forget it?
Oh, it’s possible to forget the accident
numbed by shock, anesthetized by pain
I wake in the hospital swathed in bandages
I have a hazy recollection of noise
Grinding metal, smashing glass.
The doctors stitch up the hole where my arm was
“There, you’re fine” they say.

My life is now an endless series of small battles
to tie my shoes
to brush my teeth
to count my change
with only one arm.
How dare you ask me “Why can’t you forget it?”

Guidance for Depression

(Written in January 2006)
Lit a candle for spiritual help.  I’m feeling awful — I don’t even know how to describe it.  Sad, lost, bereft, worthless, meaningless.  I feel like my life is going to go on like this — cycling between depression, fear, and sickness — for years, never getting better.  I feel like I’ve been floundering my whole life and never gotten anywhere, or even gained much wisdom and compassion.  I feel so useless.  and ashamed that it takes so many people – most of them therapists – to keep me functioning at all.  That time last fall when I thought I was doing better seems like a mirage.

Dear Spirits, I’m feeling profoundly discouraged about my whole life.  Please help me.
Dear Jenny, you have been better before, and you will be better again.  It doesn’t matter that you don’t know what to do.  This is a process and it is going somewhere.  Thomas Moore says a dark night of the soul is the night sea journey that arrives at a new place, the chrysalis from which the butterfly emerges.  You don’t know what work Spirit is doing in you.  Patience. You are not alone.  Surrender to the process and see where it takes you.  Dear Jenny we love you.  Know that this is all for a purpose, even tho you can’t see it, that all things do work together for good, that you are a part of that working for good.  All shall be well and all shall be well and all manner of thing shall be well.

I’m trying to see the depression as some meaningful, transformative thing that’s happening to me, and my job is not to fight it but to allow Spirit to do its thing.  I don’t feel any better but am more able to just be with how I am.
