Somatic Experiencing

(Written in February 2011)
Went in to Caryn’s studio & demanded my corner so we set it up.  Told her about wanting to learn all about Elisabeth and considering that a sign of health.  Also about weathering two disappointments — the food I bought for Eleanor didn’t work, and the slide show still isn’t happening — but then being brought down by the House cutting the budget for Planned Parenthood.  I said I saw the parallel with my family — stupid unfairness and being helpless against it.  Then I had nothing to talk about, so I paid attention to my body.  Felt relaxed and comfortable.  Then maybe Caryn asked about integrating the negativity and I was reminded of that session with Kevin when I became a planet by accepting all the dark rigid parts, like mom & dad, as well as the more attractive parts of me.  She said “Can you feel that in your body now?” I saw that I could.  There was a lot of diversity, and the dark rigid pieces felt more like a community — yes! They have self-organized out of the chaotic group!  I don’t think I had got that far to tell Caryn.  Then I did some movement — mostly stretch, on the floor.  She said she saw an organism expanding, but not defensively.  So then, remembering the feeling I had come in with, I curled into painful tense postures, then kicked & punched which felt good.  We talked about the question how did I weather the two disappointments on Friday only to be felled by politics on Saturday?  Who knows?  It’s probably a number of factors, whether I’m feeling strong or vulnerable, etc.  I can see that I’m more resilient, I know I can call a friend, like I called Bobbi after S crashed me.  Caryn recapitulated all the work I had done to get to this place.  That was good, I could feel it as a strong foundation.  I told her part of my anger at the House for trashing Planned Parenthood came from knowing some facts: the Freakonomics connection of reduction in crime with Roe vs. Wade, and Bessel VanderKolk’s story of the study in which the babies whose mothers had been “visited” did not produce as high a percentage of criminals as those who weren’t visited.  At one point my mind started to wander off to the horrors Barbara Kingsolver tells about, and then I pulled myself back — in fact perhaps pulled myself back to state these data that contradict the vote of the House.  I also talked about non-linearity, which is always a comfort when I imagine the Republican onslaught continuing to build without resistance.

Bodymind Work

(Written in February 2011)
Kevin was a huge help.  I told him about the trouble I’d been having with my right leg — tho it was a lot better when I demonstrated the knee down twist.  I told him I thought it was the sort of injury that wasn’t helped by stretching.  He agreed.  Then he talked about the body’s perception — to the body all the space around me is also body.  When I go to make a movement I need to be oriented, to sense myself within the space, and then the movement should be drawn out by the space, not initiated by the brain.  That results in isolated movement, the arm moving as tho it was not connected to the body.  It reminds me of the alternate way — moving the arm from the center of the body.  Both images result in integrated movement.  Then he had me sit down on a bench, feet on one of those prickly mats, hands holding two posts on the table in front of me.  He talked about the importance of opening the front of the spine.  Then he pushed in on one vertebra and I allowed the spine to curve inward from that point.  When I had gone as far as I could, he would have me push out at that same point until the spine was completely curved the other way.  I remember Caryn doing something similar with me in the fold & then cow & cat.  When I walked around afterward the spine felt very strong.  Finally I lay down on the table and he worked on my neck.  Painful but needed.
When I left I felt energized.  Driving down I had been having a hard time finding a comfortable position for my head and shoulders, driving back I just pushed forward with my sternum and everything went into place.  When I got back Eleanor said my energy looked great.
There was also a moment, early on, I think I was curving my spine out & in at the table, when my head came up Kevin said I was “glowing.” Suddenly I felt myself shrink & tears behind my eyes, and a momentary flash of that kid coming down the ski trail and calling his mom to look.  Then I was angry about how that part of me got squashed by Mother.
O gosh I feel so GOOD.  Peaceful and relaxed and yet energized.

Guidance

(Written in February 2011)

Dear Guides and Guardian Spirits, I’m feeling pretty blue.  Please help me.
Dear Jenny, we love you.  You care a lot about people who have a hard time because they are poor, or sick, or a minority that is discriminated against.  You see quite clearly that health care, decent wages, and civil rights ought to be available to everyone.  It is painful to see wealthy people cutting programs that help the needy.  Remember that this is not forever, this is just this particular time in history.  Things change all the time.  There are many people working hard to help shift humanity to a more compassionate and sustainable way of living.  Take heart, dear Jenny.  Know that your work of healing, your intention to be compassionate, your holding a vision of cooperation and fairness, are helping to bring that better world into manifestation more surely than any political process.  We love you!

Invalidation

I talked to my sister recently and asked if she was interested in the “occupy” movement.  She said “It’s just a bunch of young people who want to make trouble.”  I said actually there were older people too, and real conversations were going on.  I may even have said that they were creating a new kind of community.  She focused on all the garbage left in the park.  I finally said “Let’s talk about something else.”
I thought I was OK.  Even though I had been tired all day, I was able to teach an evening of dance.  But the next morning I woke up depressed, barely able to function.  Eleanor came in and told me her latest tale of bureaucratic bungling, and then asked how I was.  I said depressed and needing to cry (crying will often relieve the feelings, even when I don’t know what they’re about.)  She said “Can I help you cry?” but I was already crying.  First I said I didn’t know what it was about.  Then I said maybe it was disappointment because I had hoped to see Cory that morning and had been unable to get ahold of her.  That kind of disappointment will often cast me down.  Then I told her about my sister invalidating my excitement about the “Occupy” movement, and she said “Oh, Jenny, that’s BIG.”  I cried some more, then gave her a hug.

Looking back now, I see that the person who spoke so intelligently and eloquently to the reporter with the video camera at Occupy Littleton on Saturday, that person just disappeared when it came in contact with the “family field.”  The “family field” is like a magnetic field.  It’s what I call my internalized parents, a very particular energy that shuts me down, especially when I’m being enthusiastic about something I care about.  It’s something that I’ve never met from my sister — I know she loves me and she’s been a great support in the past.  But the “family field” is still inside me, and can be triggered, especially by my siblings.

I’m always sad to see how easily I can be struck down into depression by a relatively trivial event.  At least I now know what to do.  First I called my most politically aware friend, but only got a machine so I hung up.  When another call failed to connect with a living person, I went to the computer and found Ellen Kennedy’s video of dancing to “American Prayer” as part of “Occupy Boston.”  It has become very meaningful to me over the past weeks, but somehow it didn’t work.
So I went to Marianne Williamson’s speech at a church in Berkeley.  I had already watched about 30 minutes of it, so I moved the cursor to start halfway through.  I found her enormously helpful.  She speaks intelligently about politics, but always in the context of Spirit.  She reminds us of our history, and of the other movements: the Abolitionists, the Suffragettes, the Civil Rights movement.  I had to stop listening because it was time to leave for Montpelier.  I felt much better, but also very strange, almost like I’d been called out of one world and into another.  In some ways that’s true, I had been submerged in the world of a traumatized infant and had shifted to the world of an intelligent, compassionate, and aware adult.

Thanksgiving

“The arc of the moral universe is long, but it bends towards justice” was Martin Luther King’s own succinct summation of sentiments echoing those of Theodore Parker.

I’m hugely thankful for the people who have continued to insist on living by the principles that this nation was founded on — “Conceived in Liberty and dedicated to the Proposition that all men are created equal.”  The Abolitionists and the Suffragettes and the Civil Rights Activists made the words “all men” truly include all human beings, no matter what gender or color they were.  I’m convinced that “government of the people, by the people, and for the people, shall not perish from the earth”, but I’m a little worried about its health currently here in the United States.  I’ve been listening to Marianne Williamson’s talk in Berkeley about the “occupy movement.”  She retells our history and says that many people warned us that a lot of money in the hands of a few people was most emphatically NOT democracy.
She also said, of our trying to take on the 1%,  “THEY have the power, THEY have the technology, THEY have the money … what do we have?  We have what the Abolitionists had, what the Suffragettes had, what the Civil Rights activists had…   a better idea.”
She repeated my favorite quote from Martin Luther King,  “The arc of the moral universe …  bends toward justice.”  After reading “The Better Angels of Our Nature”, I see that that statement is not just a visionary’s hope, but a truth founded on our whole mental-emotional history from the Stone Age onward.

She also read Dr. King’s principles of nonviolence, and said how important it was that people in the “Occupy” movement learn and practice these.

She reminded us, and I remind you of that wonderful quote from Gandhi:

First they IGNORE you
Then they LAUGH at you
Then they FIGHT you
Then YOU WIN

Integration

I took the collage down to Caryn, and did my best to interpret it.  I said how I’d been a little disappointed at first, but the addition of Bella and the dancers really brought it together.  How did that feel in my body? Arms & legs were muscle and bone, but my torso was full of little particles full of energy.  Caryn suggested that they might be twinkling which sounded right.  I was SO TIRED that I went down flat on the floor as I did with Kevin.  I said I felt like I’d been cut into a bunch of pieces and whirled around in a dryer.  As I lay there, they settled down, somewhat like my collage.  Then they gained form & weight, became 3-dimensional, a sort of pile of cut up things, not yet integrated.  I saw that they needed to be allowed to integrate in their own way.  Finally I got tired of lying patiently and needed to move.  We went up to Kevin’s studio so I could roll & pour on the carpet.  Then I collapsed again but couldn’t get comfortable.  Caryn suggested I stop trying to change the discomfort and just be with it.  There was an odd tension on the right side of my face, and discomfort in my belly.  Then I noticed I was finding breathing difficult so I rolled over & put my hand to my face to open the right nostril the way I do when I go to sleep.  Finally Caryn suggested we sit in zazen which actually felt good.

Driving home I thought about what it felt like to have integration needing to happen, and how it felt when it was happening.  This is new for me, I think because it is NOT a conscious process, so I can’t think about it or write about it.  I just have to let it happen. In fact, it’s a good idea to distract the cerebral cortex with some task so it won’t interfere with the integration process which is taking place on the subconscious or unconscious levels.  I find that my “mindless practices” of playing computer solitaire and doing puzzles turn out to be very good activities for this purpose.  So instead of thinking of them as a useless waste of time, I do them consciously with the understanding that they are helping the process of integration.  Reading also works, but it has to be something easy, with a happy ending.  I find that reading old favorites, like Brother Cadfael and my Elizabeth Goudge books, works the best.  Painting or collage would also work, but I find it very hard to get started which is sad.  I know this is because these activities weren’t supported by my childhood.

“Visioning Boards”

Four of us gathered to make “Visioning boards”.  We had a bunch of magazines, heavy paper, scissors, glue sticks, colored pens.  The idea was to gather images of things you wanted to have in your life in the future.  The others were more practical, finding images of cars, or travel, or furniture.  I just gathered images I liked, mostly animals and landscapes.  Also words: “liberty, equality & caribou” against a prairie, GRASS ROOTS on green grass with wild flowers.  One picture was of a huge number of birds, in the sky and settled in a tidal marsh.  I cut out letters to spell ABUNDANCE.  I took my favorite picture of myself and put that in the center.  I had also found a picture of a horse running in a meadow in front of mountains as a representation of myself.

I finally put together something I was pleased with, but it doesn’t have representations of actual things I want: Neskaya, dancers, slide show.  Also Bella!  I put Ann Mank’s card of the “little dog doing a Bella imitation” but I don’t want to have that dog and not Bella.  I need to find or draw the pictures of these thing and put them in.  I’m thinking that, since I didn’t make it specific, I can interpret the images like a dream:  I want a world whose human community grows up from grassroots processes, and where all beings are free and equal.  I want there to be abundance of wildlife and of everything that’s needed for a healthy life and a healthy planet.  Especially I want there to be food for all.  I want to be able to move (the horse) and to play (that’s the Oriental polo player and his silly horse).  Stonehenge is there to stand for the slide show.  There are also “the nature of transformation”, a buffalo head, a canada lynx, a black-footed ferret.  There’s a black circle — ancient metalwork with gold figures on it: a chariot drawn by lions, sun moon & stars in the sky, a priestess with a gold cup.  There’s the picture of Ra, a replica of an ancient boat built with papyrus, and a huge statue of Jesus under water which I placed under the boat.  The Night Sea Journey with salvation always underneath.  There’s also a cave painting, which with Ra and Stonehenge, suggest my continuing interest in ancient science and art.

The next day I added a peace symbol, a picture of Bella, and the title of the new version of the slide show “Sacred Sites of Ancient Keltia.”  I also cut out another small picture of myself, and used it as a template to cut colorful dancers out of stickies.  I placed them in a circle around the picture of me in the center.  I’m very satisfied with the finished project and put it up on my refrigerator door.

Guidance

Dear Guides & Guardian Spirits, I’m pretty bummed out.  At least partly the ending of a weekend full of people and meaningful activities.  I could write out my list of reasons, but I’m not sure that helps.  Can you tell me something to strengthen me, or cheer me up or anything?
Dear Jenny, we love you very much.  Remember that in the deeps below the Night Sea Journey is god with arms open wide.  And god loves you thoroughly and completely no matter how bummed out you are.  It doesn’t matter.  What you stand for, in your energy field, for a healthy planet and all beings cooperating in loving reverence, is still there even when you are unable to take action you think is necessary for that world to come into being.  In truth, all your actions are in alignment with that vision, no matter how small and ordinary they are.  Cooking breakfast, washing dishes, brushing Bella, helping a friend,  because of your love and caring and commitment to the truth, all these actions are already part of that world you are working to bring into being.  It’s OK to be down for a day or two.  You need to recover from a very intense time.

The image of the Night Sea Journey and god underneath comes from a collage I did on Monday.  A group of friends got together to do “visioning boards”, with a lot of images of things you want in your life.  I didn’t have any clear idea, so I just picked images that called to me.
