I went down to my friend (and Kindred Spirit<\/a>) Teresa on Friday night.\u00a0 We were intending to go on Saturday to a gathering which had had to be cancelled.\u00a0 We found out at 10:00 after a lazy breakfast. \u00a0 What shall we do? \u00a0Let’s just hang out.\u00a0 We sat comfortably on the couches, having a nice rest, while we talked and talked and talked.\u00a0 Somehow we never seemed to run out of things to talk about. \u00a0Finally at 2:00 in the afternoon, we decided to go out.<\/p>\n

Teresa drove us to Salem where we walked through the pedestrian section, which was lots of fun.\u00a0 She said not to come in October, because it was full of people come to celebrate Halloween.\u00a0 There were stores with witch garb, witch costumes, witch masks, lots of colorful and interesting shop windows.\u00a0 Then we came to the Peabody Essex Museum<\/a>.\u00a0 Teresa wanted to see the exhibit of the Strandbeest, strange constructions that walked on the beach.\u00a0 What we saw, I realized later, were \u201cfossils,\u201d ones that had fallen apart and could no longer move.\u00a0 Apparently the artist, Theo Jansen, has been building them for 25 years.\u00a0 There was a talk, and then we wandered around, looking at and playing with creatures and small exhibits that demonstrated how parts of the machines worked.\u00a0 On Sunday morning, we finally watched the YouTube video<\/a>.<\/p>\n

We had meals at two really great organic restaurants: The Organic Garden Caf\u00e9<\/a> in Beverly and Life Alive<\/a> in Salem.\u00a0 Fabulous food!<\/p>\n

Saturday night we talked some more and shared our videos of our favorite people.\u00a0 Father Greg Boyle<\/a>,\u00a0 Nadia Bolz-Weber<\/a>,\u00a0 Tara Brach<\/a>, Sera Beak<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Sunday morning we continued our workshop\/therapy\/Kindred family session.\u00a0 Finally at 2:00 I had to go if I hoped to get home in time for dance and to pick up my dog.\u00a0 We were still talking as we got in the cars.\u00a0 Teresa, bless her heart, drove me back to Rte 128 because I had got lost getting to her.<\/p>\n

That morning we had watched the Tara Brach video “Committing to Joy” in which she talks about joy as a “moral obligation.” \u00a0That struck me, it resonated with words Brother Cadfael<\/a> is fond of saying “to refuse to enjoy ( beautiful women, bright colored flowers.. etc) is to throw God’s good gifts in his face.” \u00a0So I was very much open to the idea. \u00a0Tara described her own practice of saying “Yes” to whatever came along, good or bad. \u00a0I started doing it, but it quickly faded into the background. \u00a0But it didn’t stop. \u00a0I had the most extraordinary experience. \u00a0It helped to be in the company of a Kindred Spirit, with whom I felt utterly free to just be myself. \u00a0What I felt is hard to describe. \u00a0Tara calls it “openness and flow.” \u00a0 I was experiencing life as colored shapes that stretched and shrank and morphed and twisted and flowed past me, and it was all very easy and comfortable. \u00a0It took me awhile even to recognize that I had had this experience, perhaps because it felt so completely natural. \u00a0I am so thankful, to Teresa, to Tara, to the Kindred Spirits Camp<\/a>, for opening this door for me.<\/p>\n
