On Saturday I was talking to a friend about spiritual practice.\u00a0 She had been reading something that talked about single-mindedness as the way to enlightenment.\u00a0 I said I wasn\u2019t interested in enlightenment, I wanted to live my life as well as possible and help heal the earth.\u00a0 I thought about how I had gotten where I am, and it certainly wasn\u2019t through single-mindedness.\u00a0 Unless maybe my commitment to truth could be called singleminded.\u00a0 I saw that odd set of steps by which I had arrived at the expression of my vocation \u2014 seen now only in hindsight \u2014 and how I had met the right person here, was given the right information there . . . \u00a0 \u00a0 I could imagine God guiding me \u2014 now go this way, now go that way, here\u2019s this person\u2026.\u00a0 I looked at the improbable series of events that led to my book, circle dance, and Neskaya, and I saw how if one small thing hadn\u2019t happened, I would never have arrived.<\/p>\n
I\u2019ve told part of the story in \u201cHow I Got to Stonehenge<\/a>\u201d and\u00a0 \u201cHow I Got to Stonehenge Again.<\/a>\u201d\u00a0 The whole story goes a lot farther back, and has a lot of essential pieces.\u00a0 One way to tell it is: If I hadn\u2019t been told about Stonehenge by John Garber, I wouldn\u2019t have gone.\u00a0 If I hadn\u2019t taken Modern Architecture I wouldn\u2019t have met John Garber.\u00a0 If my parents hadn\u2019t had a friend with a house designed by Frank Lloyd Wright, I wouldn\u2019t have met John Garber.\u00a0 If I hadn\u2019t got tired of science I wouldn\u2019t have been taking art courses in my Junior year. \u00a0And so forth.\u00a0 There are a lot of little pieces in the puzzle of my life.<\/p>\n I\u2019ve started writing down some details of this process and it\u2019s a lot of fun.\u00a0 A totally unexpected result \u2014 I\u2019ve been feeling happy!\u00a0 It started Saturday night, lasted all through Sunday, and is still going on Monday morning.\u00a0 How amazing!\u00a0 Thank you, all of you!<\/p>\n On Saturday I was talking to a friend about spiritual practice.\u00a0 She had been reading something that talked about single-mindedness as the way to enlightenment.\u00a0 I said I wasn\u2019t interested in enlightenment, I wanted to live my life as well … Continue reading
