“The arc of the moral universe is long, but it bends towards justice” was Martin Luther King\u2019s own succinct summation of sentiments echoing those of Theodore Parker.<\/p>\n

I\u2019m hugely thankful for the people who have continued to insist on living by the principles that this nation was founded on \u2014 \u201cConceived in Liberty and dedicated to the Proposition that all men are created equal.\u201d\u00a0 The Abolitionists and the Suffragettes and the Civil Rights Activists made the words \u201call men\u201d truly include all human beings, no matter what gender or color they were.\u00a0 I\u2019m convinced that \u201cgovernment of the people, by the people, and for the people, shall not perish from the earth\u201d, but I\u2019m a little worried about its health currently here in the United States.\u00a0 I\u2019ve been listening to Marianne Williamson\u2019s talk<\/a> in Berkeley about the \u201coccupy movement.\u201d\u00a0 She retells our history and says that many people warned us that a lot of money in the hands of a few people was most emphatically NOT democracy.
\nShe also said, of our trying to take on the 1%,\u00a0 \u201cTHEY have the power, THEY have the technology, THEY have the money … what do we have?\u00a0 We have what the Abolitionists had, what the Suffragettes had, what the Civil Rights activists had…\u00a0\u00a0 a better idea.\u201d
\nShe repeated my favorite quote from Martin Luther King,\u00a0 \u201cThe arc of the moral universe …\u00a0 bends toward justice.\u201d\u00a0 After reading “The Better Angels of Our Nature”<\/a>, I see that that statement is not just a visionary\u2019s hope, but a truth founded on our whole mental-emotional history from the Stone Age onward.<\/p>\n

She also read Dr. King\u2019s principles of nonviolence, and said how important it was that people in the \u201cOccupy\u201d movement learn and practice these.

\nShe reminded us, and I remind you of that wonderful quote from Gandhi:<\/p>\n

First they IGNORE you
\nThen they LAUGH at you
\nThen they FIGHT you
